the money is going into me and scottys pockets. t-shirts, spoke cards, and an afterparty gets expensive.
not including prizes that had to be bought.. and yes, expect a nice turnout.
people from san francisco, seattle, new york, and chicago are coming to race.
    gonna get wild.

If I remember right Brian messed up his foot and shouldnt ride fixed because applying back pressure messes it up again. He has a damn fancy Time bike, so im guess his 12 speed is his beater.

  4.

hey it's your call dude. the offer is there. whats up with all these people who can't ride fixed cuz their doctor said? did some study come out im unaware of? or is it that dirty dirty roadie doctors who hate the new fixed gear "fever" sweeping the nation?:) I have the most fucked up old man knees and I only have issues on bikes that are set up wrong.

Brian's foot got blasted apart by a car and now it's held together by metal.
    Personally, I wouldn't chance it.

  5.

I suppose i shoulda prefaced the above, but keven "playground terror" can't ride fixed per her dr's orders...boo.

^ ^ ^ like recent doctor's orders? or some shit he said years ago and she said 'fuck it' and started racing track?

  6.

???fuck if i know i heard it second hand.

but have you ever heard of some shit like that? that fixed gear specifically is bad for your knees feet whatevers? I feel that it has strengthened my leg and knee muscles, I actually have less pain now that before i rode fixed. I've had 2 acl's and 1 mcl and some microfracture surgery as well on the really bad knee. I wanna get some baller insurance and get the other one done soon.

or fuck it and just go full robocop status...

  7.
    stumptown:

It's weird because riding overgeared up hills for track training, like 53x16 up Tabor or whatever always seems to make my knees feel better too when common sense should say it's killing them. Whenever that seatpost slips a little bit though... I'm fucking done for.

edit: this shits way off topic though, i'm going whisper status

for sure, bike fit is number one issue. I think thats most peoples problem. maybe i am just hypersensitive to how my bike is set up, but i see other people swap saddles and stems around like "fuck it" and i gasp...i couldn't do that I need to be measuring and testing and re-adjusting and shit.

i just posted this to get a dialog going, it's some shit we be trying to tell people but they don't hear me though...they need to listen up. good info.

in fact I'm gonna start a thread about bike fit with good links and tips

I'd say that since the crash was so recent (he still has metal in his foot) I'd stick with what the doctor says. Perhaps after he recovers for a greater period of time he should look back into it.

  8.

fair nuff, but maybe someone with matty's number could verify that gears (and brakes for that matter) are ok for this race.

geez you guys have more excuses than a blind kid without a cane.
race whatever you want.. road bike, recumbent, unicycle, razor-scooter. whatever..
and yes, cassypuss is racing. so is milkywilkerson from frisko, killerjon from seattle, upstairs anthony from chicago, and many more. and ten bucks isnt only for a race with chances to win awesome prizes..
its for a t-shirt for your laundry basket,a spoke card for your collection, and an afterparty to get loose and things. maybe if we play "mash" at the end of the race you guys will roll through. haha.
but seriously it should be fun.

Haha yeah, I figured.. there will always be those who are too quick to judge.
I really appreciate the offer, but I think I gotta pass. Summer '09 will most likely be the soonest I can return to the fixed-gear drivetrain.. and what a glorious summer it will be :)

I'll be on my daily locker– an early 90s blue Nishiki. I'm not looking to go crazy, just want to support mychew and ride with you all.

I don't really see why you think it's an issue to race anything other than a track bike... there's plenty of messengers around here riding mountain bikes (Peaches I'm thinking), road bikes, cargo bikes etc. Monster Track in NY is the only shit I can recall that's strictly brakeless fixed... almost every race I've done here has had a few people with gears and brakes.

I personally dont give a fuck if brian rides a unicycle. i was trying to be nice by offering the GTB keep him from looking like a tool. Jeremy. stick to the books and let us internet bike experts figure this one out.

remember reading this when I started riding fixed:

That's actually not written by Sheldon Brown...but Sheldon did write:

"Some fixed-gear fans make a point of not using their brake except in an emergency. I am not sure that this is a good idea. Heavy duty resisting is widely reputed to be bad for your legs, and to be counterproductive for building up muscles and coordination for forward pedaling. Google for "eccentric contraction" for more on this topic. Eccentric contraction is reputed to cause micro-tears to your muscle tissue, so it actually weakens your muscles, unlike other forms of exercise."

    and one. you got me.

I remember reading that as well and have been curious about the difference in "heavy duty resisting" between skidding versus the repeated resistance of using back pressure to slow down. I've liked to think that using my front brake and occasional skids that I'm not messing with any muscle tissue.
