I just went through another schwalbe blizzard sport today and i need new tire recommendations. my friend said to check out soma everlast's but soma is out of stock. also i talked to my friendly bike mechanic and he said they werent that good. any help poeple? oh yes and price is an issue.
yeah soma everwears are pretty good for back tires. I hear some people have had sidewalls on them crack.
I'm going to start running a set of vittoria rubinos soon, front and back. such nice riding tires
oh and if you want everwears, check local shops
anywhere in particular?
21st street bikes had the one i bought, even though the guy called them "everskids" and not in a joking way
how big? For skidding inverted tread tires for commuters are good and cheap. 25c is a good all arounder if you can't stuff big tires into your frame. Vred fortezzas ride well at $40 and the vittoria zaffiro is very tough and - bonus - $12. I used zaffiros for skidding but run tubular now so I don't skid anymore.
Vittoria randoneurs are fun they are fat (28c) heavy and slow though. They also come with reflective sidewalls!
I run the soma everwears (they come in 23 and 26) and have many different color sidewalls.

check em out. i get mine from my buddy in philly who has a shop. but you can find them in town most likely
I rock soma everwears as well. I love em.
gotta say i'm not jumping on the soma wagon. they are a generic, cheap tire with a lot of rubber (but none on the sidewalls) with a soma stamp sold for more than double their value. they aren't bad, but i dont think they're good either.
if you skid much, the vittoria randoneurs are great. they are fatter (which is not a bad thing, keeping in mind we don't live on a velodrome) and have many layers to go through before you blow out so you know where you are. my last tire went black for a while, red, black, thread, black, thread, black and then a thread like layer which i didnt want to explore past. basically, if you skid as a functional element of riding, or you just love to burn that shit down for no reason at all (not passing judgement or anything) the randos are the right choice.
if you don't skid much and want a good responsive tire, try the rubino/rubino pros or any other decent vittoria. i, being a city rider most days who rides a lot when i can, love a beefy, durable tire that will last and serve good function for my needs so touring tires like the conitnental touring tire or the rando are great.
im not sure how much you guys are paying for your somas, but if your order from universal cycles and choose local pick up (they are in industrial NW, 18th and thurman if i remember correctly) there are only $30 a pop.
Dean recommended the Serfas Seca, and I've found them to be pretty durable. They only run $20 at Bike Central. $18 at REI I think. They come in 23, 25, and 28 I think.
Sidewalls blew out on my Soma Everwears. They are a cheap Panaracer tire that Soma has made way overpriced... If I'm going to pay 30+ for a rear I'd rather have a Gatorskin than Everwear, they ride so much nicer and last a good while too. But I usually do Serfas Seca if I'm paying for rear tires, Dean got me on it, I get them for $18 or so and they last me ~2 months of riding.
As far as NICE riding tires, GP400's, Schwalbe Stelvio's and Michelin Pro Race 2's... and Gatorskin Spriner tubulars.
I have been liking my Vittoria Zaffiro and Rubinos a lot. The Bontrager hardcases did me pretty well too.
I bought Soma's New Xpress once and they were the worst tires ever.
The next tires I buy will a Vittoria Rubino pro for my road bike's read and a Corsa for the front. Then the Rubino's on it will go to the fixed. But I am really curious to try the Conti's too, I ahve heard lots of good about their various tires.
I've got 25c Gatorskins. They seem to last pretty well.
Yeah, contis are great, I'm running a Grand Prix on the front and a cheapo hutchinson on the rear that I'm planning to replace with a gatorskin. My road bike has gatorskins and I haven't had a flat since I've put them on, even riding in Arizona where cactus thorns litter the roads.
I actually got a flat in the driveway of my apartment right after putting the gatorskins on for the first time. i like them enough, i seem to be getting the same amount of flats as I always have but some people talk about putting them on and not flatting for years.
I got a flat on my Rubino Fri night. Was about a half mile form home though, so not too bad.
I have really leveled the tire out, but cannot see the threads yet. Hope they have some more wear in them.

i don't think i've ever flatted a gatorskin. and i love those tires to death.
I'm running Shwalbes on my bike up here.. I'm not stoked on them.. But i have Conti Sport Contacts on my bike in SF! Fucking Rule!! They are huge!! You have rubber for years! My boyfriend had them on her for over 2 months before i got her in december and i've been riding her and it's april and i haven't even switched the back tire out!
man, i've been running schwalbes since last summer with no punctures. but then again, those lasers i mounted on my handlebars take out most debris pretty cleanly.
haha.
but seriously, i'm going to replace my rear with a vittoria something or other. maybe a randoneur.
anything thats free when mine show cord
so I made it the whole winter, slipping maybe once on my bike.
Luckily I'm like a cat and didn't fall.
I rode around 3 hours today and I wished I had super wides.
The debris and blossoms on the ground are slippery as shit.
Advice, don't ride through a pile unless you're got MTB tires on.
I like those cherry blossom piles, I practice my "switchstance" or left foot back skids in them, well when I run across one, I don't go looking for cherry blossom piles to session or anything...
Great all around tire that will last through sketchy-pothole filled roads.... Specialized All Condition Armadillos. They last through winter and summer, glass and nails.
PLUS, you get a free tube from a SPE dealer when you get a flat with them!
Great Tire
Great Warranty.

Revolver recommended soma everwears and they usually have them in stock. Revolver is on interstate and portland blvd.
I'm really liking the kevlar gator skins 23's
but gator skins and 'dillos are soooo expensive. I didn't mind until I ditched the brakes and started using the skid for e-stops.
gatorskin tires ride like garden hoses and has even less traction in the wet.
I've never felt like they rode bad. I come down the OHSU hill everyday at 30+ and never had them slip. I've been using the armadillos though their a little heavier.
i've been using the rubinos for the past couple of years and they've done well.
have used serfas seca for quite some time and have had no problems what so ever. plus they are cheap.
longwood:have used serfas seca for quite some time and have had no problems what so ever. plus they are cheap.
I run secas as well, but the traction for me is super iffy.
I can't even touch wet metal or ride the corners, otherwise i slide all over.
i've tried the schwalbe blizzard and the traction stunk. The serfas seca ... i don't remember why i didn't like those, but for some reason in the past i vowed "never again".
Max is NOW!:longwood:have used serfas seca for quite some time and have had no problems what so ever. plus they are cheap.

I dont know a tire yet that holds on wet metal. Came close to eating it when I was out of the saddle when a light turned and went over a manhole and with the loss of traction my jaw came a within a couple inches of the stem.
I'm pretty satisfied with randonneurs on the rear

I'm also sure any tire that would hold on a wet surface would not skid. So weigh it out, skid and slip or not at all.
i love my vittoria randonneur for the back.
and i use a schwalbe stelvio for the front.
i change front alot though.
sometimes conti ultrasport.
Schwalbes are my favorite feeling tire period... this isn't for skids, just for going fast. First time I rode Schwalbe's I was instantly in love haha. I'm about to replace an old-as-dirt Conti 4Season for a Schwalbe Stelvio and I'm stoked!
Conti GP4000 is also a very nice tire. It's all about throwing down top dollar for the front tire.
liking these rubino pros mucho
what!?
reminds me of a little girls bike with the white tires. white skids!
Those white tires will be brown and dirty before you know it. Hah. Then youll leave brown skid marks I bet. Lol.
--
I have a rubino pro on my road bike, but I also run an open corsa ex up front. They roll very nice, but I would not put either on something I even occasionally skid.
stumptown:It's all about throwing down top dollar for the front tire.
true
walton:stumptown:It's all about throwing down top dollar for the front tire.
true
yeah continental GP 4000 S
does anyone know anything about michelin tires, as a back tire.
they're on sale @ REI right now
i have a specialized armordillo on my back right now. Its been holding up for the past month.
i rode somas for a while but they are too expencive and dont last super long.
plus there isnt much to tell you they are gonna blow....besides the threads
i blew out on NE Broadway at 12:30 am
no bueno
I ride soma everlasts because they came on my bike, and for some reason, even though I dont like them at all, every time I buy a tire its an everlast.
They arnt that great, just a panaracer tire rebranded as Soma.
The only plus is very few flats for me from debris. There are gouges at least a millimeter-millimeter and a half deep from glass into my back tire, but no flat. The only times I have flatted on them are when I got this weird metal ring stuck in my tire and from pinch flats.
But why not just get armadillos or gatorskins.
Traction okay, but not amazing, front wears down faster then you would expect.
Sidewall deterioration is visible, but no consequences yet, for me at least.
