Yeah, I work pretty close by so I'm up there fairly often. I've never done a road race before and have no idea what to expect... (last place most likely)

  2.

ha ha, yeah, i'm not changing my gear, which is big for mt. tabor (49x16). i started using it on the flats of columbus ohio, but i've found it manageable for most riding i've done in portland.

I haven't ridden up there since that one time with you like a week into moving to town. I'm going up again on friday, hopefully it'll be better.

like everything it depends.... I ride repeats up on mt. tabor a lot with a 42x16 and find it pretty comfortable.

This should be fun. Im thinking about running my geared bike first then doing fixed for a second event. We will see if Ive got it in me.

I run 48x19 and climb tabor pretty well with that ratio.

I'd love to do it twice but I don't have a geared bike right now. Do you race for a team?

Nope. I am kind of a newbie to racing. Did two of the banana belt series but am looking for more. Was thinking about joining Team Oregon which seemed like a good team to start with. But I am going to wait until I race at the track a couple times at least to see if any more interesting teams are out there.

I've done the fixed gear category at Tabor for the past 3 or 4 years. It's all good fun and a lot less stressful than a 'regular' road race. I think the fixed gear bike is the great unifier. There are usually between 7-15 riders of all different abilities.

Hit me up if you have any questions.

As far as gear ratio goes, I run a 42x15 at Tabor. My usual 'around town' gear is a 42x17. They are thinking about mixing the course up this year though with more climbing, so we will have to see.

Ah, good to know. Is it like the cyclocross singlespeed race where the people racing range from beginner to pro?

Yeah, exactly like a SS cylocross or singlespeed mtn bike race. Beginner to Pro. There are usually a couple really fast guys that battle it out for the cash (20/15/10) prize and the rest of the group battles it out for the glory of coming in 4th place ;).

BTW: I noticed that David Auker just joined... He is one of the guys off the front that no matter how much I try or how fit I think I am that always finishes with the money. :)

For what it's worth, I commute over Tabor everyday & I rock a 42x16. That gears seems to work fine for me. I'm planning on sizing down my back though to like a 42x14, just for the extra workout on my commute. Nothing like a vigorous hill climb to start out the morning!

  5.

i ride tabor every other day on my commuter...which is 50 x 14. its pretty easy as long as your frame is too short and you run 4 inch wide flat bars. i find moving the u lock to the left pocket works wonders as the road curves to the left.

anyone down for running an njs racing class? its the only REAL

  6.

Porter, thanks for the mention! Tabor is fun, great end of day happening. It's kind of amazing how large a gear will make it up that hill. Two years ago I thought I would go for a smaller gear and that would be my advantage on the uphill, not having to mash...but the downhill was really bad, I knew right away it wasn't good spinning way faster than everyone else! I think I then went as high as a 44x15 and it was good. (As far as sharing gear size: I once asked a Eugene rider what he used at Cherry Pie...like we're friends and all...but HE WOULDN'T TELL ME! Secret!)
