Crazy, but overly sensationalized. Congratulations, Maxine Bernstein; you have now joined the ranks of Portland's worst journalists, e.g., Beth Slovic (Willamette Week).

Yates' mistake: chasing down a cyclist to tell him he was in the wrong.
I'm not condoning what McAtee did, but I sure as hell wouldn't run around pointing the finger at anyone.
You never know when someone has a gun. Or a...bike. Don't go asking for trouble, that's all I'm saying.

  2.

McAtee's mistake: riding drunk and THEN trying to assault someone with a deadly weapon.

Shit I do both, but never together.

  3.

    that was pretty poorly written

I think the Oregonian is getting the response they wanted.

Is it a bad incident? Yeah. But how many drunk altercations happen weekly? What about road rage? Plenty im sure. Some more aggressive than others. So what if one guy was in a car and another in a bike. F*ck the Oregonian front paging this. Makes me want to go not buy one of their papers ever.

    -edited-
Needed to get rid of what could possibly be incriminating evidence. Cause we I dont need no legal trouble.

  4.

I think people would have to WANT to read the boregonian first.

I agree with jeezy and grimm - poorly written and shouldn't have been put on the front page.
However, it was the first copy of The Oregonian I ever bought...so I guess they did their job.

Shit I didn't know it was front paged on their paper...I just saw this link on the interwebs. Agreed...Shitty writing about a shitty situation. Either way I'll be on my traffic P's and Q's for a hot minute...

  6.

    That was horribly written.

    I agree with Krysten.

    Yates sounds like a douchebag.

"Yates continued driving north on 20th Avenue, through another intersection, until he caught up with the bicyclist.

Yates honked his horn, leaned out his window, and chided the bicyclist for making other cyclists look bad. Yates, a self-described bike advocate for more than 30 years, told the bicyclist that he was a responsible bike rider who gets upset when he sees fellow riders disobeying traffic signals."

It's not like the drunk fuck did anything to harm Yates by blowing a red light that Yates was stopped at.

I'm not down for everyone attacking West Burnside like it's a zoobomb, but if you track down, honk at, get out of your window and yell at any bike who runs a red... expect some sort of shit someday.

I'd WANT to fuck up a car (not the guy inside) like that if someone did that to me.

Moral of the story is to mind your own damn business whether you're a driver or a cyclist. Both parties are at fault, but I do feel sympathy for the driver getting his ass kicked in front of his wife and kids, and it's fairly ironic that he's a bike advocate...

i wonder what kind of bike the drunk dude was riding?

it would take a whole lot of horse barbiturates to get me to try to use my bike as a weapon. that's why god invented u-locks (or, much less severely, water bottles)

    SPEAK AMERICAN!

  9.

FYI hella info was left out of the article. like how the "witness" who socked the bike guy was actually a passenger in the car. Or this "bike activist" whos only activism comes by way of being a Bike Gallery salesman oh and a critical mass ride in 98. fuck this whole shit. hows this a huge front page story when Iran is testing five ICBM's today. Only thing that surprised me was that dickhead namedropping famegrabbing fuckbag from a certain well known blog didn't "uncover" this story. fuck the media in this town.

PS this whole shit goes to what EVERYONE was talking about today. people need to mind their own fucking business. let that be your moral of the story.

    Haha. Love it.
The rules of the road were not written for us, they just put us under the umbrella of cars but then dont give us any respect or space.
Hell most the time I even try to obey the rules pretty well, but I still roll stop signs if its clear.
