So I need new straps. Mine keep slipping and it's really annoying to mess around with the when I'm riding. Mine are no name leather straps and I just want to know what everyone is using and what they've found to be the best straps that are affordable?
nylon. sturdy, affordable, vegan. they will never break.
They're not affordable but toshi straps are the best.
Some will swear by leather, let them swear.
I've broken 4 sets of leather straps, about 7 straps total.
I've never broken a nylon strap.
Thick ones. Hard to lace through clips and pedals, but worth it once they are there.
I ride two sets of specialized thick nylon straps I bought used.
Try it.
Completely cliche, completely unrealisticly priced but completely true.toshi double.
Try a pair generic double straps (~$25) and get a set of clips to accommodate them.

thank god. if everypost in here would have been about toshi doubles I probably would have blown my head off.
PS. Leather works if you're a fair-weather rider, or feel like buttering your straps every two days.
PSS. Toshi's work great, but I wouldn't ride them daily. Friend in SF had his straps stolen.
I'm with Max get nylon. I've broken to many leathers and I'm not about to pay $100 to find out how good Toshi's are.
If you buy leather make sure its laminated. If not youll bust it before long. If you go leather pony up and get good ones.
I own some MKS Alpha doubles that are pretty comparable to Toshis. Cost is up there as well though.
Nylon is fine on the cheap. I bought some Pake laminated nylon straps that are like traffic saftey yellow, and hold really well so far.
Ya toshis are great but there's this thing called being kinda broke. I know soma makes some double straps so I was looking at those but I was also thinking of just buying a set of christophe straps and making my own doubles with some nylon materal (i'm sure you've all seen this diy).

Agreed but be careful with the laminated nylon, I seen it split at the end more than once.
Ive heard the soma straps stretch and break. But ive also heard their new ones are supposed to be better. But if I was gonna buy double leather, I wouldnt mess around with buying Soma personally. Buy nylon till you can throw down on some overly high end straps.
Max, good to know. What do you mean by at the end? I havent had the straps real long, and have by no means put them through the ringer. But so far so good.
If you want to preserve the life of your straps, I've seen dudes electrical tape up the contact edges of the pedal, too.
Nylon splits are the worst.cadence makes nice double-izers for cheap.mink oil on toshis for all weather.
silvas work well. just be sure to glue the leather to the middle piece of plastic or else it will seperate.
caviar:mink oil on toshis for all weather.
That's about as anti-vegan as you can get, haha.
Max, thanks for the tips. Shits good to know, dude.

Some of em just start coming apart at the end. Depends on if they are sheet-laminated or like paint-laminated (don't know the technicals).
The "sheet-laminated" ones split into the three parts: laminate - strap - laminate
Granted I've only seen in on hard-core cross bikes and dudes who ride like maniacs before.
yeah teh whole electrical tape thing is bomb for straps
"One less vegan"
mink oil and toshis is so ritzy.
mks doubles period. they have more cow than toshis
Campy strap.
being the cheap mofo that I am I went and got the soma doubles. So far they feel great I just hope they last. I'll let everyone know.

bad bad. the cheap double straps will snap in a couple months and the double soma clips are the most uncomfortable and least durable clips iv seen. they also bend if you step on them. suck it up and get some 100$ double straps. i dont think anyone who has purchased them has ever regretted it. but i guess it all depends on how into biking you are
clipless!
sucks

Not sure about where you get your funds, but last time I checked dropping $100 on straps don't mean shit for how into biking you is.
Being able to get a setup that works is.
EDIT: think I read that incorrectly. God I hate reading vs talking.

then why arent you riding around on a 5 dollar kmart bike?
its all relative

I don't even know how to respond to that one. Take that extra cash you got laying around for your full NJS setup and take a logic class at PCC.
more money does not equal better.
Ask anyone who bought a Delorian.
real talk.toshi.
Chill pill.
If Spencer wants to throw money at some fancy straps thats cool. If he wants to spend $5 thats cool. I have both kinds. There is a law of exponential diminishing value with bike parts, but that doesnt mean they were all created equal, but it doesnt mean you get more enjoyment out of better stuff. Just ride yo bikes.

That photo of the Delorian was pre'fuggin sweeeeeeet, not gonna lie.

in this case it actually does. find me one other person out there who will back up the idea that two nylon straps hold and stick as well as toshis and are equally as strong and stiff.

I'll do you one better.
I'll buy $100 toshis, and if they can last through my winter then I'll never speak poorly of them again.
If they break, you give me $100.
PS. No angers from me, I just don't think leather will ever be something for an all-weather rider.

what's up with radderday man?
if i had a hundred dollars i would honestly put it down. but i spent it on doubles:) though i actually am sure they would last you through winter. my friends been riding the same pair for 2 years brakeless and there is still virtually no sign of damaging wear on them anywhere.
The leather straps I just took off are still in ok condition and they were $15 with clips and I rode them daily all winter in the rain. The only thing that sucks about the straps is the buckles. I ride brakeless and am pretty hard on my straps because I refuse to skid 90% of the time so we'll see how the somas work.
somas suck im pretty sure.
yung jeezy pdx:somas suck im pretty sure.
I've seen Somas fail on people: not fun. Of everyone I know who rides with doubles, I'm the only person without Toshi or MKS (I have errebi sprints, which aren't bad, except that they completely split).
right now i'm running two pairs of christophe nylon straps, they're thicker than the floppy nylon ones. i like them a lot
that being said i've got a pair of toshi single straps lined up for the new bike

My Toshi's have lasted me through a winter's and a half, and I was riding them near daily in the winter in Eugene to commute to class.
I think I prefer clipless in the rain anyway though...
I've never had nylon break...but I made mine duct tape doubles...on the cheap ftw. I mean I just can't justify $100 for straps
My straps nylon just fray.
i like looks of the cadence doublizer. or doug's homemade leather doublizer, if he made a few i'd be happy to pick a set up. or i could get ambitious and make my own.
yeah if doug made some doubleizers i'd exchange a set for cash
pj uses eletrical tape to keep her straps together
highly recommend it
sorry but i'd rather support local craftsman
she crafted this idea locally
clever
