Heres the deal: I just got diagnosed with mono, and due to complications from riding ~50 miles (on trails!) per day for a week, I am not going to be able to do any real riding for another 2 months. goddammit. But as I am at the tender age of 16, I figured that I could live vicariously through all you other whippersnappers who enjoy your bicycles. Plus, we can't go to many venues, can't drink (technically) can't smoke (again, technically) and for those of you under 16, you're still required by law to wear a helmet (you law breaking ruffians, you). So what's an angst-ridden teen got left to do but ride?! I started to throw around some ideas about starting points, themes and other possible events last night, and thought I should probably see how well this would be received by the fixed community before I continue. If a large enough group was attracted, there could be other comp-E-tishuns and some such other events. The under 21 rule would be pretty regulated, but I'd like input from everyone, no matter how old. And give me your honest opinion, though I'm likely to discount such sentiments as, 'fakenger...messengers this messengers that'. and also concerns about safety/responsibility, while possibly valid (though no more so than at normal alley cats) are probably gonna be ignored. also, 'Alleycat' or Alley cat' ? both spellings seem right. thanks for reading, please leave some feedback.
When I was 16, all I did was, well, I did a lot of stuff. But I sure didn't throw no alleycat races.
Do it. You'll be a hero. Just don't ask me to buy you beer...
just call it a checkpoint race.
I am 22 :(
sorry! get a fake that says yer 19. I heard underage is the new 21 anyways. Now that I have Freebird's blessing, I may proceed. (dead serious). Actually, If you'll race on that fucking awesome tracklocross bike I could perhaps bend the rules?
Okay, Okay, I'll bring beer.
I'll be there, and help out at all if you need it?
Haha, Freebird, you pushover! Still, huzzah for beer and slave labor! Good to know you guys got my back. I jest, of course, but I will have at least one person attending, so looks like this thing is an emphatic 'GO'. Walton, I think I can corral some friends into the organization bit, all I need help with is passing out/putting up of flyers.
I'll run a checkpoint for the hell of it. why not.
Details, details.... So when? I'd like to see the youngsters. Tricks and shit?
Hey kids lets see what ya got......I'm just a old guy that likes to run stop signs. HaHa
Love it...(freebird) "When I was 16, all I did was, well, I did a lot of stuff. But I sure didn't throw no alleycat races. "
well I'll be. looks like the older folks want in. HMMMMmmmm....well maybe there could be other events for folks of all ages. ACTUALLY I just got a great idea. I'm thinking about holding some kind of gigundus ghettodrome at Grant's track, among other things, and if all you over 21-ers wanted to help man checkpoints/do other odd jobs in the preparation I could grant you guys access to the rest of the events. 'Course you'll all probably just show in a big, drunk, adult mass. And that's practically unstoppable.
Ha.
footdown!
Did I ever mention I'm an agile 260lbs with a 38/18 ratio?
It's like pushing a gorilla, I've been told.
Of course I'm only slightly more well balanced when I'm drunk.
yeah thats a good idea. 'course, with a setup like that, we'll all just be competing for 2nd. ain't no shame in silver, I guess. maybe i'll get the old man out there on his old girardengo roadie (a not very nimble 200 something pounds) just so Max has some competition.
sounds interesting. details though?
I know about 6 people, including myself, who would LOVE to see this happen.
cool cool, glad to hear more support.
Stine, It's still a rough sketch (and still completely in my brain). So no details other than that I want to hold it in Grant park and have all the events within Grant. 'cept the race, of course. that'll extend into the surrounding neighborhood. unfortunately, I don't think everyone is totally familiar with that area so it's gonna be fairly easy for kids from that area. everyone else just gotta grit their teeth and guess where 5th and Brazee is. and it's probably gonna be a checkpoint race with tasks/riddles that you have to complete/figure out to get to the next checkpoint. So not real conventional, but that's the bones of it. now i just gotta complete the guts! ETA: 3-4 weeks.
get a megaphone and some free issues of vice as prizes
If you need any help with flyers and stuff just give me a shout.
walton:get a megaphone and some free issues of vice as prizes
haha
I'd be down. I'll either get DFL or not finish, but if freebird brings the beer, I'll try.
i'm willing to help out with this.
good to see some enthusiasm, unfortunately I've been sick on and off for a couple weeks so i have an absolute shitstorm of schoolwork to catch up on. But we can still make the deadline! if you guys could start throwing out suggestions about anything and everything I would have a much easier (thusly, faster) time of it. If there aren't any suggestions it will take some time to complete for sure. thanks,
Will
I'm totally down for this, and this is what I think:
The alleycat should only be in Northwest so we could call it NWA = Northwest Alleycat
I don't think it should be strictly U 21 but let everyone know that the vast majority is going to people under 21
If its NWA then one of the check points or start or finish should be above the Thurman Street Bridge.
As for standings go, if its U 21 that means Walton is going to win, so Second place should count as first, 3rd= 2nd, 4th=3rd.... and Walton gets the Untouchable Award
Under 21 is the new 16.
It would be fun to do a long race, move it around portland, if that doesn't workout the NWA idea doesn't sound to bad.
that sounds good. i dont really know NW but then again i didnt really know downtown and i almost finished that one.
dude... just ride around NW for like a week before the race. Make a special map for yourself and you'll be set. Plus you'll have a super cool handmade map, always useful in times of duress. Think about it...

tattoo it on the back of your hand with a bic and an exact-o knife
stick and poke, i think those hurt less
I'd like to see a checkpoint at about 27th and savier
im doose doose, let me in on that!
if you guys won't let me do this, i wanna help out. I'm 23 so I doubt you'll make an exception...?
count me in! I have been wanting to alley for quite some time now
does anyone know how to make a google map so that anyone can edit it, we could have one where people posted proposed checkpoints
i second that. plus my condition has gone from 'sick' to 'all kinds of fucked up' so this is now, officially, a group effort. a communist alleycat? and jon, I think we're gonna open it up.
You guys are seriously asking this?
Have you tried clicking the map button at the top?
sorry man, I didn't look on the site. Thanks
hahaha. Don't worry.
It's easy to edit once you click add/edit.
I've started marking checkpoints in NW, just mark places you think will make good checkpoints I'll try to come up with a icon for it soon.
I like the idea of a NW-specific race. Maybe we could start somewhere up north in the industrial district, then race into town, although that will probably mean going through that gnarly I-5 exit intersection at the bottom of 23rd. We also have that cool park to hang out in before/after. Thurman bridge is also a good call. NW is flat enough that some of us less apt riders (read: Me) may actually have a chance to finish.

Thanks for the backup phil.
Definetely needs to be a checkpoint in the industrial district, and one in the Montgomery Park parking structure.
So Rev. Jackson what do you think of all of this? I know its not in the Grant area like you wanted but it all sounds pretty sick to me.
can we throw a checkpoint in saint johns
That offramp by NW 23 is the best place in Portland to get runover!!! YEAH!
Avoid the bike lane at NW Everett and 18th and the six surrounding blocks in both directions. People love to throw glass and other shit into it for kicks. Just take the lane.
When I ride NW I just ride on peoples faces.
Max is NOW!:When I ride NW I just ride on peoples faces.
Haha, that's a great idea. But seriously, I got a flat there once and you know what the culprit was? A fucking syringe.

Oh shit... sorry about that.
Haha, were you busy shooting up and you accidentally left your syringe laying around? Thanks, man! You owe me a tube!
Yeah and if anyone finds any condoms on the street those are mine too... I'm trying to create a chud baby.
Hahaha. Good luck with that.
