I know we have a ton of framebuilders in Portland, but I need a quick braze repair (literally, 15 minutes) on a frame, and I'm feeling like I need to bug someone who has less than a 6 to 48 month wait time.
I used to go to Bernie Mikkelsen down in Alameda Ca, and he was great. In and out in a day or two, great work, super reasonable. I need to find somebody like that here. Help.
Jordan Hufnagel might be able to fit you in. I think he's in Germany right now though, should be back soon.
I'm not sure if he does brazing (I think he might) but if you ever need anything straightened check out Dave Feldman. He works out of his garage in Vancouver but pickups/drops off at Sellwood on Saturdays. He's a life long bike mechanic and his work is top notch. Give him a ring at 360-694-4228.
I literally dropped my Kelly Cross bike off at David's place this morning for a quick repair of a brake stop that snapped off. I'll submit a report when I get the bike back in a couple of days. David is a super nice guy and well regarded in Portland.
Hey Porter, let me know how it goes. I emailed Hufnagel and he said he doesn't really do repairs, although he'd be willing to look at mine. I may try to meet up with him this coming week, but I'd like to talk to David, too.
btw, my good friend used to work for Chris Kelly when he was in Oakland. I had a NICE Kelly road bike that I sold, and still dream about. I wish he'd get back to building frames, already.
I just realized that I never reported on the repair that David did. I am extremely happy with the price, the timing and the quality of the fix. He even went to the effort of bringing my bike down to an automotive paint store to mix up some touch up paint. (It's not perfect, but still, it's so rad that he did it and the 'not perfect' look is better than having primer applied to my top tube).
I would definitely recommend him. I'm not sure if he still does pick up at Sellwood, so call and ask him. I had to drop off/pickup at his shop in Vancouver. Though, that might be because I didn't ask. His place is relatively close in the 'couve though.

I wish he would get back into building frames as well. I love my Kelly and Chris is a great guy. He was in town for Cyclocross nationals in 2004 and talking with him sold me on this bikes. Lots of love in them frames.
I ended up getting Hufnagel to wrangle up my repair. The frame's still down there and I'm just getting set to build him a workbench/storage cabinet thingy for his shop. Good guy.
