Since there is an ungodly amount of racing in July, I figured I'd make a thread for it all. This includes jr and team state championships, state games of oregon, normal state champ, and the mother of them all, AVC. All alongside your normal Wed, Thrus and Fri goodies.

First off: Friday. NOT starting at its normal time. It'll start at about 2.30, and run till about 7. Racing for EVERYONE. If you have even remotly thought about comming out and racing, do it on the 4th. All the cash is going to help Zaks fucked up shoulder. If you havnt come to a Wed class, show up. Hell, if you cant on Wed but think you are almost ready to race, I'll go out on Thrus and help ya.

I'll post more detailed shit as it gets closer.

Man July is the month for everything. Track racing, my bday, some traveling, and my douche bag brother-in-law's wedding.

So it looks likes besides FTF the state games seems like it has a good amount to offer for the 4-5's. Is there any other stuff I should really look to competing in? And heck if I do another FTF and another event theyll pretty much have to upgrade me out of the 5s.

For the 5/4s, the state games and the normal state championships are good. Hell, if y'all wanted to, get togeather 3 people and do a team sprint on the 5th.

Team sprints sounds fun. Hows that work exactly, is it like match sprint only both groups have 3 and youre relying on one another for speed to draft?
Whos down and at a somewhat similar level?

The gals actually only sprint with 2 total people, guys with 3.

Here's the rundown: You start in the middle of the front strech (at the prusuit line, aka the red line going half way up the track). You are all side by side. Once you get the sound to go, you all just bust ass to get up to speed. Whoever is the lowest on the track (called 1st wheel) is only on the track for 1 lap. Middle guy (2ed wheel) slots in behind the wheel, and 3ed wheel slots in behind 2ed. 1st pulls for 1 lap, and then pulls way up track (pretty much to the rail). Now, 2ed wheel is in the wind, and he pulls his lap, then pulls up. Finally, the 3ed wheel does his lap and when he crosses the line, that is your time.

It's sort of hard to explain where to pull up. You have a zone in which you have to do it. But the jist is that you have to be up track before the start finish line.

As for choosing who should be 1st,2ed, and 3ed....its a little tricky. 1st should be your best starter. The guy that can get to speed from a dead stop the fastest. 2ed should be your fastest guy. 3ed is whoever has the most endurance.

I'd go get some vid too, but i have to run off to pratice

Oh okay. The opposite side of the track thing makes sense, I was confused how thatd work if both teams were battling it out right next to each other. How does this differ from a team pursuit? Just shorter with no aero bars? I assume its a standing start and not a rail start, right?

I think Id make a decent lead out. Anyone else want on Team Grimm?

So I think im in for the state games. Is the much point to coming to the obra track champs is I am still a 5? Im actually kind of interested in trying out a pursuit too, I think with my body type and way I like to ride I may be decent at it. Just need to figure out some aero bars and practice with them first though.

Though if I do well at the next FTF I will ask to be upgraded probably. We'll see they. Im not counting on it specifically.

Well July track racing started off pretty decently. Though my first race I pulled my cleat out of my pedal. So I went up track and bagged the race. Was pretty bummed about it but made it up by winning the last two races. I think I should upgrade. Though Im happy with my efforts on both, I felt like I knew Id do well at these races.

Nice work Kevin, getting second even though you had some hard works the day before. Cant wait to see how you do at the AVC.

Thankee. Pretty bummed about the day overall, but thats just because I'm incredibly hard on myself. I just wish McLaughry would kick my ass by a half lap or something lol. This winning or loosing by 10mm is killing me, espically when there was a BIKE FRAME on the line.

The picture above really makes me wanna mention something about sexy cycling girls and legs, but its probably better I dont go there.

PJ I think everyone is wondering that same thing.

Kevin, get better and I hope your wheel is alright. If I had a good wheel to loan you I would. At least you didnt get as banged up as some of the other guys.

Overall I feel good about my day, though feel somewhat like a sandbagger. I got second then first on the last two events, so I overall won the day. Originally we were supposed to have one group of 4/5s, and since I was a Cat5 (and doing almost too good in that group) I thought this would be the perfect transition omnium. But we all lined up and Candi made the (very wise) choice that there were too many to be safe. So while on the rail I had to choose if I wanted to race with the 4s or the 5s. But this was my 4th event ever on the track by OBRA rules (unless told otherwise) I was still a Cat5, so I went with it. If nothing else it feels really good to win, cause I keep getting my ass kicked at Tabor and in road races. Oh well, it was still fun and I am now officially a Cat4, and since its starting to get late in the season I will probably stick with that and then try to get to a Cat3 early next season.

Anyways, hopefully Ill see some of you next weekend at the track champs. I dont know what events I will do just yet.

The wheel is destoryed. As is the Teschner. The disk has about 5 huge cracks in it, along with the panels of carbon have started to seperate. The Teschner has a solid crack in the top tube, and is not good enough to ride. Overall, today cost me $4,700 dollars if I had to pay for all of it over again. Kirk (my coach, and river city god) is working Teschner for me, and with some luck, I'll be getting a new frame for free, or close to it. I'm sort of screwed on the Zipp, but we both are going to call them (river city and myself) and see what they can do for me. Besides that though, the bike is ok.

Body wise I'm fine. Very, very stiff hip which is making it a bitch and a half to walk and some expected rash, but thats it. I plan on being on a bike by tommrow morning. Cant really afford to "rest" as AVC is about 2 weeks away.

Dont know what it looked like from an outside picture, but it was pretty hellish. I was riding abut 2-3 feet from the guy in front of me's back wheel. I knew the bell had to be ringing either that lap or the next, so I glanced over my right shoulder to see who/how many folks were comming over. But in the time it took me to take a quick glance, the guy in front of me had checked up, gone down track a bit, and then came back up, taking out my wheel. I went down pretty hard. I tried to tuck my bike into my body because I knew there was the entire back behind me. Yea, that worked like a fucking charm. Jay Brown who was right on me ran the disk over, and Curtis ran the frame over.

I'll be at the champs next weekend, although I wont be contesting the Keirin. By that time I still wont be on my own bike, and the Keirin is sketch enough without me risking someone elses bike.

Oh, and on another note. Last year at the AVC, I crashed doing my 200 (pulled wheel). The date was 7/7/07. Today is 7/7/08. For the record, I will never race on 7/7 again

Kevin, really sorry to hear about your crash/loss. Hopefully you can get the damages sorted out. PS Don't want to ruin your coincidental thing but it's 7/6/08 (Sunday), tomorrow will be the 7th.

Lol yea I figured out the 7/7 think a bit later.

Teschner already has a new frame and fork in the mail to me. Fucking stoaked. With any luck, I'll have it built up and ready to roll by AVC. Right now I'm set up on Kirk's 53 Tescher and trispoke rear wheel. Doesnt fit me worth a crap, but it will hopefully get the job done for this weekend in the sprints. I'll probably run the Keirin on a rental bike and just throw my wheels/bar on.

Some Qs for the track champs.

What gear do you recommend for a kilo and 200m?
For the pursuits do you need aero bars? Or will most people in the 4s just be running drops?

75 lap points race, really? And then the senior men do 150? Yeesh. That sounds too long for my tastes. I did a 35 at the Heart Breaker and it was def a long event. I guess that just means Ive got sh*t for a VO2 max or something.

There is 2 trains of thought for the kilo. A) throw on a huge gear, get it rolling the best you can while you have fresh legs, and then just hold on till your done. B) Put on a smaller gear that you can turn the entire time, even when your body wants nothing to do with it. I'm a big hater of the kilo, so I cant really tell you any more than that (most pain you will ever feel on a bike....if you do it right)

As for the 200, that I know a tick about. I would say nothing smaller than a 88. You want to run the largest gear you can while still getting some ok leg speed out of it. Keep in mind you have 2 full laps to get the gear up to speed. It also depends on how your legs feel on that day, and how hot it is. The hotter the better. Best advice is go go out, run one in a 88, rest as much as you feel you need, get a 90 on, do it again, and repete with any gear that you think might work.

Really dont need aero bars. Belive me when I say they are sketch at the track. But if you have em, why not.

    Thanks for the advice.
So far the largest gear I own is a 49x15 (85.5") which I have been using for track. I am really thinking I should buy a 14t (92").

Honestly I was trying to keep my gearing a little low for awhile to try and teach myself to use a higher cadence and be efficient, but I think ill be faster mashing something larger.

I train for kilos but never feel like I want to when I do them. Either I go all out from the beginning and start to fade out 50 to 75 percent of the way, or I build up to an all out and don't feel like I gave it my all, or fade out anyway. Reason I train for them is because I think being good at them lends itself to versatility in other events.

Saturday's sched is looking like an FTF with keirins included, I think I'll come out and race for that... I'm stoked that the Concept should be ready by then.

If it aint no fun, then dont train as hard. Shit, just racing is a good enough workout as is. I personally think that racing will do more for all the cat 5/4s than training will. Skill, learning pack dynamics, and tatics are more inportant than being able to dominate a sprint imo
