okay dudes, I have never been to the coast. we should ride bikes to the beach on a friday and then spend the night out there, either in a motel or camping.

    routes here: http://www.portlandonline.com/TRANSPORTATION/index.cfm?c=39889

let's pick one and do this.

also, does anyone want to bike to multnomah falls with me? weekend after next?

If there wasn't two alleycats going on this weekend, I'd totally do this.

  1.

Oh, oh, oh...I've been wanting to bike to Multnomah falls for some time, and I will have my new bike the week before. A nice, lengthy weekend ride could be the perfect way to break er in...

Kinda short on the notice. I plan on racing Sat too. But I dont think id have time till Aug anyways.

Ive ridden to the coast on a geared bike a few times, its nice. Multnomath falls once on a fixed and loaded with camping gear in my bag.

I wanna do like a 3 day tour. Ride to Tillmook on Fri, then up to Astoria then back to PDX on Sun.

I could take a Friday off, no problem, or maybe Labor Day?

I'd also love to bike to Seattle.

All of that is really ambitious. Especially if you're talking about doing it fixed. Props if you can pull it off. The coast range ain't nothin' to fuck with.

Honestly, there is a decent climb to the falls along the CRHH. I dont think getting to the beach would be that much worse as long as you werent doing it fully loaded on a FG.

There's always the option of packing light and shipping stuff to destination, like a hotel or bike shop you plan on doing business with at the destination.

I've been wanting to do a beach trip for awhile. I'd be running a brakeless track bike though. It's all flat there until you get to the end and then I think it's mostly descents... which beach by the way? Cannon Beach and Manzanita are pretty cool and not that far.

Shipping stuff? I think itd be cheaper to just have a friend drive out with camping gear even at the risk of that feeling less DIY or something.

On our camping trip out past multnomath falls one of my friends rode his fixed brakeless. When we got back he admitted it was stupid and he should have ran a brake. His legs got tired from fighting the spinning and he ended up ted shredding it by the end.
    But whatever floats your boat.

It is indeed not practical, but is totally badass nonetheless. I've done some crazy downhill stuff in the countryside on long road rides, and it's been scary at times when the road is winding and I'm spinning literally out of control at what I guesstimate to be 200+ RPM.

I may reconsider the brakeless thing if this plan actually comes to surface and I make it out for the ride, though.

I don't know which beach to go to, I've never really been outside PDX except along I5 to Seattle. I think anyone interested should list dates they're available for either trip and we should decide on a route, then consider springing for a room together if we want to stay overnight.

Hmm. I'm jobless right now so could totally do it any time except this and next weekend, but I'm looking to get employed somewhere real soon so all that could change.

Pending that I'm not employed by then, I'm clear. I'm down for the beach. And yeah, come to think of it I'll probably install a front brake if I do end up going, mile long downhills in the country are no fun when there's cars around you.

    Multnomah Falls: http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-states/or/portland/353421538

so, about 70 miles one way if we start downtown. do we want to camp out there, or just turn around and do 140 miles in a day?

I'd be into camping, but I don't have any equipment.

My votes in for the coast, but which beach are you trying to do?... and is return day Sunday or Monday?

Cannon Beach and Seaside are ~80 miles away depending on route, but there's not many routes IIRC.

Here are the routes I found to the beach: http://www.portlandonline.com/TRANSPORTATION/index.cfm?c=39889

going to the beach might be easier, I would imagine we can bike there and spli a hotel room?

okay dog we could still do mult falls, just tryna gauge interest here and see if we have any camping equipment, or if folks want to do 140 in a day

  3.

i've got camping equipment, shit i'm a regular at REI, but to get three or four days off in a row from work i need like, a months notice. which puts me about august. oh but i no longer have a bike that carries panniers. i've done runs with that kind of distance in georgia on fixie but i'm not sure what the land is like out here yet.

  4.

oh wait, i was going off of what GRIMM said. i'd do that for real.

Ben - I heard that it gets kinda hilly on the way out to all these destinations. I'd be glad to put some racks on my bike.

Also, I was thinking weekend trip - do you need to request a weekend off to do go?

Multnomah Falls I'm thinking could be a day trip if we left early enough.

  5.

i have a brand new set of racks and panniers somewhere in one of these boxes but i sold the bike i had them on before i left atlanta.
