Eugene, which used to be second only to NY a few years back, doesn't even make the list this year...

I wonder how this list compares to the list of cities with the most locked up bikes on a given day?

    I am not surprised.

I still see road bikes only locked thru the top tube with quick release front/back all around downtown.

That's easy money for your average meth-head homey.

You should see Eugene... it makes everyone in Portland look like seasoned veterans. Bikes locked up just by the front rim are abundant, to say the least.

hmm didn't know that we were that bad.....

  1.

I know of at least 9 friend's bikes that have been stolen in the past month. Two were out of my garage while I was home!!!! Fucking NE crime rampage this spring, I tell ya.

Here's my Dark Blue Cannondale Touring that is still MIA:

Gabe, how were your friends bike's locked (if at all)?

I paid attention to the stolen bike listings on bikeportland for a long time, and the trend I saw was this: 90 percent of stolen bikes were either chain locked or unlocked. It's rare for a bike to be stolen by a high quality U lock used properly, although there are exceptions. Low quality U-locks are another story too.

  2.

Well, a few of them, they had it coming...

But the majority of them are brazen thefts. Like my friend walked up his steps, set his fixie down on the porch, ran inside to grab a glass of water and came right back and the bike was gone. Another friend walked inside while gardening, and a minute later the thieves had walked through her fence gate and stolen 2 road bikes out of the back yard. All these were in broad daylight.

I use a ulock everywhere I go, but shit, If I'm hanging out in my own house I don't expect it to be broken into my some punk-ass kids.

I get in the habit of always having my u-lock. If I forget it- I go directly home.

If your bike has quality components, and the thief has any knowledge about bikes - you are out of luck. Say good-bye.

Its about opportunity, if you take that factor out of the scenario you have removed the largest cause of lament.

I always carry two mini u-locks. Overkill? Maybe. Can I replace my wheelset if it gets stolen? No.

my girlfriend got her old bike stolen from the lloyd center. it was an old beat up mtb so we didnt think it would be a very big theft magnet and only used a cable lock. dont underestimate anything. now she has an evolution lock.
