I have a friends who finally decided to give sobriety a try and quit heroin. I'm not gonna put his name up here, I don't know how he'd feel about that, but it's highly probable that some of you know him. whisper me to discuss that if you need to.

He's getting out of hooper detox next tuesday and I'm hoping to have a decent conversion bike put together for him to get him stoked on bike riding again.

so far I have a nice rear wheel via baravettski and some 110 bcd sugino's via the free box. I'm gonna need everything else. he's about 6 foot even so from a "big" 55cm frame to a "small" 60cm frame will be needed. need a cog and lockring, and 110 chainwheel to match.

I just had to leave a job so my funds are quite low, but I'll cover the stuff I can't freebox or get bro'd down to me.

reply here with any help or whisper or call me 503-901-9256 if you wanna keep it on the DL.

Thanks for any help with this, having been in his shoes I know this little bit of kindness could be the thing that keeps him clean.

    lates

    Doug S.

If you find a frame that will take a threadless headset I have a pair of chop flops and a stem that I dont foresee myself using. Ill check my spares parts further when I get home. There may be a spare lockring in there.

  2.

grimm, I have headsets, 1 and 1 1/8 both, but im pretty sure any frame i can get for free will have 1" steer tube... so unless it's a 1" stem

  3.

I'll see what I got at home and let you know later, some random bits and pieces I think...

  4.

nice, thanks a ton. I don't drive but i can strap it to my bag.

I'm just trying to stay clean myself...I know how hard it can be and how much bikes have opened my eyes to a healthier life. I can only hope they do the same for this guy i'm talking about.

  6.

i have pedals and clips. also i have an 18t cog and a lockring.

Damn you Sean, I need one of those BBs too.
    Got two by any chance?

PS Got the 40t chainring. So proba the 16 over the 18

  7.

I gotta say, all these offers of help and whispers and stuff is kinda overwhelming, kinda makes me a little misty eyed that you all would be so down to help someone...

all I can say is thanks a ton.

If I can swing it, maybe we can do a special wrench session at my house this saturday (tomorrow) to put this bike together and drink some drinky beers.

whisper me if you don't already have my address

  8.

sweet, thats one thing were for sure needing and not having

  9.

i can definitely donate a lockring, and maybe a cog - what do you think an appropriate size would be?

  10.

If Doug uses the 40t I have, prob something in the 14/15 region. Right?

I ride 40x15 with 170mm arms on a rear 700c; it feels really nice around the city.

*EDIT* I prefer a higher cadence.

I have a jacked up but usable lockring
    13t 3/32 cog
    15t 1/8 cog
    RPM 165mm crankset
    Pair of Kenda tires
    HUUGE 36c Vittoria Rando
    dirty track grips
    right hand lever
    cable and housing a plenty
    tube(s)
    unused 3/32 chain

  11.

i also have some drops. if they are needed

  12.

So, I'm putting this together and so far I know I'm still needing...

a decent used BB , the one I have is too big (i'm thinking 68x110) or even shorter spindle wise...std taper of course

    a saddle

    a 25.4 seat pillar

a quill type stem to fit a std diameter 1" threaded steer tube

bars of some sort, I have flats but if anyone has some alum road drops they would mind me floppin and choppin...

I have a brake but need a lever.. either bar-end style or cross top interupter /bmx style

    I would like a 110 bdc 46-47-48 tooth 3/32 chainring

I have tires and tubes a plenty...

If anyone has something here but is as poor as me and can'y just give stuff away ..consider trading it to me for wheel truing or wheel building. I can teach you that stuff if you'd like as well.

so get at me, I'd really like this bike to be done by tuesday when he gets out

thanks ya'll, bike is lookin sweet. i'll put pics up after the last lil bits git put on.

    still need:

25.8 seat pillar i'd like to put a nicer one on here than jonah was running ( sorry bro, no dis meant)

seat, we have no seat? anything decent..rips ok..i can sew, re-cover etc..

chain, have one but it's shite...anything that would clean up with the ol jar o gasoline teckneek 3/32 or 1/8th ok

    chain ring, 46,47,48 with a 110 bcd 3/32 or 1/8th ok

brake and brake lever...kevin phomma is coming with the lever, but my 70's shimano centerpull tourney is too wide, not workey...so any side pull front brake for 700c wheel....

bottom bracket...thinking a 110, to 107 is ideal but the 103 i got is tooooooo skinny.

    Big thanks to the donors:

Gilly, hooking us with the frame....good looking out today man!

Jonah with his frame and other stuff in trade for a deep v...thanks

Jerome aka jeezy cog lockring pedals straps etc... big upss

baravettski for the smoking deal on the wheel got this whole dealo rollin really

big thanks to these duders for reinstilling my faith in my fellow man

  31.

I just got the shittiest news, and I'm all fucked up over what to do about it.

Guy I was doing this for bailed out on rehab and is on the loose, shootin dope...no one knows where...got the news from his ex-GF...who gave him her debit card and car for a run to the store for some take out food (duh..giving a junkie a car and money...) and hasnt been seen since noon.

For sure he's gone back to the dark side...

I've got some ideas on what to do with the bike, but for now I'm just gonna go to clinton st and get dranked.

This in no way reflects on us or what we did here...we came together and did something good and right.

I've gotta go, but I'll talk at ya later.

  32.

Argg! That sounds really disappointing and frustrating. Maybe you could hold on to it if/when he comes around; I have a friend in similar situation (I actually referenced the building of this bike in a convo about that earlier tonight) who has "gone back to the dark side" a few times during her struggle, but is still very determined to conquer her afflictions once and for all.
