I guess the pedals would allow for me to move my foot that way...but I just don't. I move my heel out to clip out and that's that. No problems here.
i have some shimano spds that i found in my room, does anybody have any reccomendations on where i should get some shoes/what kind? or should i just sell them and try to find something nicer?

I know there's a lot of dislike for the Recyclery on this board, but they have some solid used shoes with SPD cleats for around $15. Go try your luck with sizing...

City bike up on 19th has some old clipless too.
If you want new shoes, look at some bigger shops and see if you can find some on clearance. I got some Izumi Vagabonds for a decent deal a long time ago.
I recommend going to City Bikes at 20th and Ankeny. Decent selection of used shoes. I got a pair there recently that look like they're brand new. Good deal.
I'm not a big fan of the Recyclery, but they do have decent used shoes for cheap. Sierra's are pretty sweet and she got them at the Recyclery.
i use eggbeaters on my daily commute. makes me a little bit faster. on the weekends i switch to normal platforms with powergrips on them. they work much better for skidding. i almost died one time when my left foot popped out of the clips on my eggbeaters while doing a skid into an intersection. i ended up breaking one of the arms off the eggbeater. clipless pedals are not designed for high stress circumstances in my opinion.

Yeah, I was actually wondering about that...I don't skid very much to begin with, but I haven't tried skidding since I switched to clipless last week. Seems sketchy.

Thats because eggbeaters suck hard too. I used a pair, and now they sit in my toolbox. I only keep them in case I build a junker cyclocross bike someday.
I have never popped out from my Keos. I could skid until I kill my tire. They are solid.

Sweet. I'm sure my Speedplays are pretty solid, too.
I'm jealous of all you clipless folks now... My orthopedic, who is also a cyclist, prescribed me platform pedals until 2009. Fark.

Bummer. Why is that exactly?
The ligament between my first and second metatarsal was completely severed, so a screw was placed perpendicular to the two bones in an effort to stabilize my foot for the healing of said ligament (the other three screws are in-line with my first three metatarsals, respectively, and serve to promote proper bone healing). I get the screws removed mid-November, and my ligament will probably be feeling a bit weird/weak for a month or so. I can't do any side-side clipless action (not 100% sure about clips/straps... loose ones MIGHT be okay) when the screws are still in 'cause there is an increased risk of them breaking, thus permanently leaving screw fragments in my foot, and right when the screws come out it will be painful and potentially dangerous to subject the recently repaired ligament to the side-side motion... But I guess all that depends on how well physical therapy goes; I'm hoping I'll be able to SAFELY prove him wrong.
That makes sense. Ugh. That all sounds really stressful and painful. Hang in there, Brian.
But then If I go clipless I can't do no mo Leg over the bar skids D:
DECISIONS!

Word. Super easy to change pedals.
New convert.
ewww, spds
I was thinking about getting clipless. But then I'd probably just stick it on the trek and never ride it.
recessed homie.
I don't sound like a horse when i walk.
aight good.
Anyone done any major whip skidding with SPDs? I'm thinking about clipless as my fucking clips/pedals keep breaking.
hudsong:Anyone done any major whip skidding with SPDs? I'm thinking about clipless as my fucking clips/pedals keep breaking.
My #1 problem so far hasn't been the cleat staying on the pedal, but getting out in time. Not sure about road shoes, but I have recessed cleats on mine so I can pull one side out and still use my foot to skid. So I don't fall on my ass when I come to a sudden halt.
Just make sure to use a different part of your foot or you clip right back in.
Or just learn to whip skid > trackstand
You can sure for hell skid, why the hell not?
Q: Is it easier to clip out of Fixed floats or dem movable ones?
I was asking, Kevin, because I've heard stories from a few people now of their feet coming unclipped in the middle of a skid.
I've heard that spd has the best retention out of the three popular mountain clipless styles, eggbeater, atac and spd. But I know a lot of people who love atacs and they're the only out of the three I haven't tried. I like eggbeaters for cross because they are really easy for dismounting and remounting but I would go with spd for an urban fixed gear application.
i unclipped pretty often when i tried to skid in a spd set-up. then again, i'm a pretty bad skidder.
i switch from clipless to clips pretty often. always clipless for longer rides, occasionally just for commuting and city riding.

Do you ride the pedals rather loose or anything?
My left foot takes almost all my leg strength to unclip from.
i ride SPDs and i love them. i think it is important to get adjustable pedals so you can dial in that sweet spot where you wont pop out during a hard acceleration or skid, but be able to clip out if you fuck up your trackstand or something. nothing sucks more than falling off your bike sideways trying to pop you foot out... kinda scary actually...
only thing is i am a lot more cautious in foot down games and practicing tricks, it sucks to do the side faceplant...
word to the wise: keep your lead foot for skidding tighter - and learn to always try dismounting with the other foot.
spd's are notorious for unclipping. Get time atac's for brakeless
That being said, head over to danscomp.com for clipless dunks
ya i think clipless is better on the track and clips is way better on the street.
yea i have mine pretty loose. i'd rather be able to get out quick than stay in for a skid

DAMN... just saw those. I'm happy someone finally made a clipless shoe that doesn't look like poop, albeit it's Nike. But at that price they're more expensive than nice Sidis and would perform about 1/4 as well with the floppy sole. Guess it'd be cool if you're a fashionable Tokyo kid who wants to ride clipless but not mess around with clickity clackity bike shoes...
i keep the tension pretty tight on my spds and have not had a problem skiddin in the 6 years i've been using them. i just make sure i keep on top of the tension.
however, i have unclipped when powering out of a trackstand.
i hear that atacs are the best for urban fixed gearing, messengering some might say. im getting egg beaters for my road bike though
i got some eggbeaters for my road bike. im lovin em so far.
I hear sharky uses Time Atacs for messenging. I like my spd's and they work well, but I am a tad worried about unclipping in a whip-skid type situation. should probs just crank down on the spring tension.
i hear every non clips and strap messenger uses time ATACS. they are the best for that sort of thing.
time atacs are sweet. walton and i were drooling over the carbon ones the other day.
i run the old school SPD-Rs for track (near impossible to get out of; exactly what i want. best track pedals, really. practically everyone out there runs 'em.) only downside is that since everyone but trackies hates them, it's hard to find shoes that accommodate their cleats (you need the vertical three-hole design). nike is the only brand i can think of that makes cycling shoes that'll fit their cleats. unfortunately, nike is getting out of the cycling business, so get a pair of their shoes while you can (Specialized and SIDI do not accommodate these cleats).
i run speedplay X-2s (stainless steel) on the street and really like them. i've used them on my lemond (SS) and on my track bike (fixed, brakeless) and have never had any trouble with coming unclipped during a skid or at any other point. plus they're incredibly easy to get into (and out of, when desired). the downside is the the metal plate on the cleat is a really soft metal and wears down fast, so much that even light walking will eat away at it so much that you won't be able to remove the cleat eventually (it doesn't affect the performance of the cleat, however). i use cleat covers to prevent that from happening, but a lot of people don't like to have to deal with that. speedplays also come with an adapter plate, so they'll fit on any basic triangle three-hole design. my pedals have the maximum amount of float (9 degrees, i believe), which i really like (mainly because i have knee problems and the float helps alleviate knee pain for me). but speedplay makes pedals/cleats with zero float as well as with adjustable float. just an FYI: a lot of people buy the speedplay light action pedals because of the price (they're pretty cheap, comparatively), but you should note that they are NOT designed for racing. they even note on the box that they are for "recreational" riding only. this is because they have a lighter spring and are easier to come out of. may be good for the fixed rider who uses a brake and doesn't skid much, but not for the brakeless rider. not ideal for doing any type of sprinting, essentially.
i switched back to toshi doubles/mks pedals for doing burrito delivery at baja fresh. man, not feeling it. clipless is sooo much better, especially if it's raining.
of course after switching from an M to L toe clip today and adjusting the straps, the efficiency was noticeably better. still can't hold a candle to time ATAC and sidi...
never been clipless. not sure what straps/clips/whatever i use... nothing totally high end or anything at all. they've been on my bike since i got it and are holding up just fine. don't really have any desire to go clipless but i've never tried it either :x
Vertical three-bolt design? I thought SPD-Rs had a vertical two-bolt pattern, SPDs were horizontal two-bolt, and LOOK/SPD-SL had the triangular three-bolt pattern.
I was baffled when you told me that Nike shoes were the only ones compatible because I coulda sworn that Specialized, Diadora, and Shimano make shoes that take SPD-Rs. Doesn't your shop sell Specialized? I love my Torch shoes, and I thought they were SPD-R compatible, if I am wrong please correct me

you working at the one on burnside?
I got some sidi dominators- love them, with spd's
I actually enjoy the spd's haven't had a problem with them so far,
the only sketch thing that has happened to me was a screw came out
of my cleat and i went to unclip and the cleat was sliding with the motion of
unclipping, that sucked. almost fell but didn't.
i usually run mks sylvans with toshi doubles and some metal clips.
changed back to those over the weekend when I was out on the coast

The spd-r's do have a 2 bolt design, it's the shoe that have the 3 holes. Some people find that they can get away with just the 2 hole, but it might be positioned to high. Diadora , Nalini, and maybe DMT make some compatible shoes.
