Currently using clips and straps. Just got some SIDIs and getting pedals tonight. How do you guys feel about this? Do you ride clipless or do you use toe clips? I ride my bike everywhere as my main mode of transportation, but I also just started doing much longer rides, which is where I think riding clipless will be really beneficial. Thoughts?
i used to be clipless all the time road bike geek, now I've seen the ways of the straps and clips and have no intention of going back..but thats just me.
this is a d'frnt strokes for d'frnt folks kinda thing.....
try 'em both and ride what you like
yeah agreed. i have done both. i commuted clipless for 3 years before i realized how much i hated bringing extra shoes with me, or walking into a bar clip cloppin all over the floor.
but i still lllooooove clipless for long rides and of course on the track.
i started using clipin pedals for training purposes, long rides, and to help with cadence... but man i just really had a hard time with them on fixed... had some real bad crashes cause i couldnt get out of them in time, maybe its just me, but now using clips and straps i dont fell any difference and i dont crash... cept when im popping mad skidzzzzzzzzzz
i would ride clipless and do on the track but i dont on the street because I like to play around on my bike and be able to bail out clips, tried to do a wheelie with clipless once.....wasn't to fun
I love my clipless. I leave an extra pair of shoes at work, but still swapping shoes can be a bit of a pain. But overall I feel like I can get a much better pedal stroke with them, which translates to I feel like I can generate more power usually when I am pulling more starting into a sprint. Use them both on my fixed and my road bike with Look Keos.
I like clips and straps, and I think for inner city riding where you are on and off the bike a lot they make sense. But I love the speed and security more than connivence.
i think clipless would be worth it on a road bike (track, road, w/e) especially for long distance. but for the street, for me, the cons may outway the pros with little things like keven said and just the fact of spending the extra cash for something like this. but to each his/her own. (krysten is this for the mixte or the TT?)
and ryan i agree. falling clipless would be an interesting situation haha. i already fall enough and am stuck in the clips even when im on the ground.
bryan.:and ryan i agree. falling clipless would be an interesting situation haha. i already fall enough and am stuck in the clips even when im on the ground.
I have fallen between 2-3 times since I have been on clipless (one of those times being last night). Every time my feet have come out.
well then maybe clipless IS better. i just like choice clips in or flipped.
i also think its strictly preferance
clips if you are in jeans, clipless if you are in lycra
bryan.:i also think its strictly preference
as most things in life are...yet somehow we always find ways to argue about it.
and so far that hasn't happened in this thread yet! rejoice!
yes rejoice!! haha
i do not discriminate against clipless mostly because im jealous i dont have it.
but i like my clips for different reasons. yadidamean?
And there was much rejoicing.
Clipless are mucho efficient. Le pedal stroke, mi piace!
That being said, I don't really care THAT much, and I'm pretty utilitarian so I ride clips & straps... cheep ones at that.
i love clipless.
best of both worlds is having a beater set up with clips/straps, and a nice bike set up with clipless. i've got sidi's to time atacs and they're the besttt! just gotta get my cleats replaced soon...
as far as bailing, i've had plenty of falls where i was able to unclip.

Right now it's for the mixte but I'd probably transfer the pedals over to the TT when it's built up. Plus I only spent $5 on a pair of $300 SIDIs so I'm not complaining about the extra cash, haha.
Krysten would it be your first time riding clipless?
you will explode at some point, but that's pretty normal.
I rode clipless on road and then fixed for about a year before giving up on it. the power transfer feels amazing but it wasn't worth the inconvenience for me with commuting.
You might find it better to just get a pair of sylvan/mks clip and strap pedals for life and keep the clipless for being a trackstar, unless you wanna click around and carry shoes.
are these road or mountain shoes? know what pedals you're getting? (not spd)
either way you're going to enjoy it
Ryan:Krysten would it be your first time riding clipless?
Yes!
Got some Look pedals last night for $7 (I fucking love John) and threw 'em on there. Rode to work this morning, absolutely loved it. I have to wear dress shoes/heels at my job, so I have to change out of my sneakers when I get to work anyway. Totally not an inconvenience for me. They're road shoes - SIDI Genius 2s. They could use some new cleats but they'll be fine for now.
Nice. Glad you like them.
grimm:Nice. Glad you like them.
Totally. I need to tighten one of the pedals up a little (I don't have the right size wrench) and I need to find a end cap for the spindle on the left pedal. I think I'll hit up City Bikes tomorrow.
Anyway, can't wait to do a long ride with them.

krystenr:Ryan:Krysten would it be your first time riding clipless?
Yes!
cool! well i think you will like them, they are great for riding, just kind of annoying to carry an extra pair of shoes around

Totally. I'm really excited about it. They only riding I've done with them so far was about ten blocks downtown on my way to work, but I'm riding out to the track later today and I think I'm going to be really happy with it.
how are they too get out of?
yung jeezy pdx:how are they too get out of?
Super easy, you just push your foot out. And so much easier to get into than clips and straps in my opinion.
i gotta try someones, anyone wear a 7 1/2 or 8?
yeah, my baby sister....
yung jeezy pdx:i gotta try someones, anyone wear a 7 1/2 or 8?
I have an 8 1/2 which is like a 39/40 Euro. You can try mine if you tighten the shoes up really tight. You can also get cheap used ones at City Bikes.
is your bike set up to be clipless?
yung jeezy pdx:is your bike set up to be clipless?
Yeah, the pedals are on there and I have the shoes. That's all you need, baby.
cool. shuddup brian
Loving the clipless. Got a pair of Performance Cat-1 Carbon Fiber shoes yesterday and Speedplay pedals ans cleats. Ditchin' the Looks for now. If anybody wants them, I'll sell them along with the cleats for cheap. The cleats are in shitty condition though and you'd probably need to get new ones. Sorry, keeping the SIDIs, so those aren't for sale.
I was thinking about buying speedplays. Actually I'm thinking about buying a clipless set.
hey man speedplays are bout the best pedel system i think. need cleat protectors if you want around alot. I use them on my race bike only.
Zero's
Yeah thats what my friend said. "Easy to get in, and out". He has them on his road bike and his club's Track bike.
damn, where you get all this money k phomma?
Astoria.
oh yeah. i forgot about that. i wish i had money like that
eh?
Hell yeah, I forgot about Astoria. You're cashing in on those folks, Kevin.
Speedplays = sweet. I really like them. I definitely need to get covers for my cleats though. I want to protect them and also because the metal makes a ridiculous amount of noise when I walk around in them, plus I've already fallen over twice just trying to walk inside Whole Foods with them on.
alex:clips if you are in jeans, clipless if you are in lycra
haha
K_phomma:I was thinking about buying speedplays.
Ewww... soo much float! Feels like walking on ice in bowling shoes. Go for the Look Keo or Sprint.

I totally disagree. I love the Speedplays. Just get covers for the cleats.

Float is the lateral movement between the cleat and the pedal.

Naw, not really.
Taken from www.sheldonbrown.com
Pedals with float allow you to rotate your heel inward or outward to some extent before disengaging the cleat.
Yea, that's the definition of lateral, "extending to the side."
EDIT: but you're right its not just between the cleat and pedal.
There is also the factor that different speedplays have different amounts of float (the zeros have none), and most of them are adjustable in the cleat I believe.

Oooo, word. I guess the ones I tried were far from zeros.
