My commute is easy on the way in, hard on the way out.
    SE 50th to Clinton,
    Clinton to Ladds,
    Ladds to Hawthorne
    Hawthorne to Waterfront or Naito,
    Naito to Oak

Ends up around 5 miles. I love it, but can only manage about twice a week these days.

To work - 57th to Woodward to Clinton all the way down across the Ross Island.
From work - Down Sam Jackson through downtown, across Hawthorne, through Ladds to Clinton back up to 57th.

Commute was decent. I rode my utility bike to make sure it was still in decent working order. Got up real early so I could ride with the wife which was a nice change of pace and fun. It was cold at 5:30 though. I havent had to wear a light jacket in the mornings in like a month.

goddamn I just caught broadway bridge eastbound perfect to williams took up a bunch of the lane, passed some people, got the left on williams with no cars behind me and then all the way up williams to shaver, maybe half a red light the whole way. I may be a simple fella, but shit that was fun.

Today's commute was awesome. Finally flipped my wheel back into it's fixed position after riding a ridiculously huge freewheel because of a broken rib. Cleaned the bike and put on a new stem as well. Felt like a brand new ride.

    Good to hear Alex.
You gonna try to make it to any PIRs before they end?

My commute was kinda fun. I changed my tarck bike to a fixed cross bike. Well mostly, still need a few parts. With a knobby 32c tire I felt like I was riding a monster truck. Haha. But then a bug flew in my eye, and I couldnt get it out till I got to work. That part sucked.

My commute today was kinda shitty. On my way to work this morning I was riding down hawthorne and there was a pick up behind me that honked at me, sped around me, then made hand signs at me that meant "give more room" or "why are you in the street". I saw him turn into a bank a few blocks up and luckily he heard me scream "bikes have a full lane!". I can't beleive people still don't realize bikes are allowed a full lane, especially on hawthorne, where there are SIGNS that say 'BIKE IN LANE'. Then down burnside my front wheel started wobbling because I hadn't tightened it enough so i had to stop and do that, and was late for work. And on the way home it was SO hot. so awful. I was drenched by the time I got home.

Get out your effing fenders kids.

I didn't put mine on this morning. Nor did I wear a jacket or bring a possible change of underwear. .
Now I sit at a desk, looking like I pissed myself, then shit myself, then had a bunch of other people piss on me.

Granted it's the wettest I've been since I found out Maggie Gyllenhaal's favorite book is The Brothers Karamazov.

So yea, new house, first time on a longer commute, wettest day is the history of August.

Haha. The one day in the whole month I need to haul a big box to ship out. And its coming down like cats and dogs. It was too hot for rain pants. So I put a long sleeve shirt on and headed out. Shoes and socks were soaked in about 3 blocks. But that was about the worst of it.

Kind of sucked, but it was almost laughable so it was kind of fun.

Toe covers are nice for this weather where its not super wet. Speaking of which I need to buy new toe covers.

At least you dont have that dilemma of 'do I bundle up and get too hot in 5 min, or walk out the door and freeze my ass for 5 minutes'?

srsly you guys are acting like some new to Portland, cali-types. it's just RAIN. you know, water. its not snow, or hail, or freezing rain. just some drops from the sky. shit its not even that cold. its like 65 at 9am.

but since you asked, for the fouler weather thats 2-3 months away,
buy some of the longer race blades, some snowboarding pants from goodwill, a nice beatheable rain jacket made for bicycling (so it covers your ass when you ride, and has lots of vents that are zippable while you ride) and on your dogs, well thats a tough one. I will be using water proof spats next winter.

In winter, when it really rains, I break out the waterproof pannier bags. One holds my change of shoes and a towel, the other holds my change of clothes. I ride wearing the same stuff I always wear, and change and towel off when I get to the office. I even have a clothes drying hook in the back office so my gear is dry when I go home.

It's just water, you won't melt.

I'm originally from Portland, so I know how the winters go. My problem is that over the 6 years I lived in California, I have gotten rid of all of my serious winter gear, so now that the weather is turning toward more normal Portland conditions, I find myself unprepaired (but I have been somewhat trying to prepare). I'll probably settle with bringing a change of clothes everywhere though.

Shit son. I rock the booties. More to protect my dumbly spendy shoes though and so I dont have to put on wet shoes when I head home. And a rear fender so I dont look like I have a sh*t streak up my back.

Don't work on a standard track bike this tall i don't think. Tried on four different bikes. Only worked on my conversion.
