How is your chainline? Is it 42mm? Are your using the JIS taper 103mm BB?

Harris Cyclery says that this should be 42mm (as well as other sites) but Bencycle claims 45mm.

I need 42mm to match my hubs.

    thx.

Side note - - thoughts on RD with a Zen messenger ring vs Sugino 75 +Zen ring? I am torn - RD has the right price but the 75+Zen combo is so tight. It's really up in the air but I'm about to order something.

  1.

I ran the messenger ring on the RD for a while, never run 75's with a zen so I couldn't compare the two but the RD's were fine, felt pretty strong, but I doubt if I would really notice a difference.

All that measury stuff I would have to check at home, I'll try to later.

Well basically I'm looking to see if your drivetrain was noisy & rattly vs not.

    thanks.

  2.

    Nope, not too noisy.

mine was noisy even when I had a 103mm bb. Nothing ever seemed to be just right. It kind of pissed me off. Now I have 75s. and a 75 bb and everything is dreamy as fuck.

I thought a more common track set up was a 107 bb ? - min - do you have some special hubs or something? go with the 75's if you can , I would say better overall quality, look at the casting and machining on the interior face of teh spider...75... thumbs up.

They're more expensive, but go for the 75's. They're 144 BCD (track standard), which will make your life easier when you're looking to change your chainring. Also, 75's are niiice.

yo ted, do you know if you used ISO or JIS taper with your old setup? The RD is meant for JIS taper @ 103mm BB spindle length. they are interchangeable but ISO sticks out 4mm further on either side for a given spindle length. It seems like the people who have funky chainlines on the RD used 103mm ISO taper (instead of JIS), which would give them a 46-47mm chainline.

Aside: The 75 is meant for ISO taper to conform to NJS standards. I believe it uses 108mm BB @ 42mm chainline.

jbucky1 - the RD uses a 103mm BB because it's a modified road double crankset.

i've got a pair of rds on a transplanted bb just a trifle too long for my taste. it's like a 108mm or something. at any rate, i have a straight chainline with my ring on the inside of the crank, rather than the outside.

a shorter spindle will correct that for me. but i love these cranks, nonetheless.

  3.

I got me them Sugino ATs. Pretty damn sweet. They were designed for heavy touring I believe. So not the first choice for fixed riders.

Def the first choice for fixed riders named Max, who's cranks think he is always riding a fully loaded bike.

Cold forged, strong as shite, and beautiful simplicity to them.

    Also auto-retracting.

I used the shimano 103 recommended bb.

While were on the topic, can someone please explain in detail how to figure out your chainline? Or direct me to a link of a good explanation.Ive always felt a little lost on the subject.

Sheldon Brown tells all. You can measure the center of the hub/seattube against the center of the cog or chainring. 42mm is the track standard for 120mm OLD spaced hubs. (That includes most hubs, unless you're talking Pauls, Mavic Ellipse, something weird.)

MIN, don't cheap out. These cranks are a joke. My chainline was like 46mm with the chainring outside of the spider, and the stock 103mm Sugino BB. I ran it on the inside of the spider as a result, it was still off and I'd throw a chain if I didn't have tension TIGHT. These cranks are a headache and if you want to get proper cheap cranks, you're way better off just fooling around with old Shimano 600's which can be had at a better deal and are better cranks anyway.

Second. I've got two sets of old shimano 600 road cranks. I love them. A lot.

Stumptown might be able to confirm but I think they have a 44-45mm hub chainline like the Paul's hubs. Nothing that can't be remedied by using the right BB spindle to compensate for but something to be aware of..

stumptown - thanks for the info bro. that's very good to know.

I have the rd's and the matching 103 bb and run a messenger chainring on the inside because of the chainline issue and have never had a problem with anything.

edit: but i do run paul hubs so that might help with it being 44mm

Exact same story here! Don't waste your time or money. Save up for the 75s!
