I'm gonna take this from LAfixed and put up this one for random bullshit stuff that really wouldn't be necessary to post 432904320x new discussions and keep things less cluttered. and once html is enabled it should get interesting! but once things get off topic either whisper or bring it here.
on that note I'm gonna head out soon, anyone want to come with to put up some flyers and grab a bite to eat?
I would love to hang, alas, i have to work on some metal stuff.....
speaking of off topic....
please check out the Work/Sound gallery April 4th (SE Alder and 9th)
A bunch of video artists and some of my metal pieces will be on display.
nice what time does it start?
if you're going tomorrow you'll see me!
this thread will, i predict, be much better after quoting capabilities are added.
so i just watched bill and ted's excellent adventure and i heart huckabees....i have to say i prefer bill and ted. huckabee's was all right, but the philosophy of the movie was presented in ways far too disjointed to make sense to me at times. at times it made sense, like max fischer, i mean albert's ruminations at the end, but i thought there was more room for improvement in that movie than in bill and ted. now, as far the philosophy of bill and ted and how it compares to huckabees...."be excellent to each other. party on, dude"--what's not to love in that philosophy?
@Jennx Not sure what time it starts, and i think i will be there tomorrow as well.
@humancongereel - I totally agree about bill & teds, although I think that Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey is a much darker and more challenging film than Excellent Adventure. i sound deliciously educated.
Huckabees is cool though too, but the whole film just leads to a more complicated way of understand whats almost a human instinct, "the world sucks, but things always change, so keep going." Although I will admit that I was finishing a philosophy degree when Huckabees came out and relished in the philosophical nerdom having a fanboy movie of my own.

well, some of the metaphysical ideas seemed like sort of...half-baked the way they were presented. had this been more like waking life or what the bleep do we know, it'd have been less appealing to as wide an audience but have more time to devote to simply developing the ideas. i mean, the stuff about "where does my nose end and space begin?" or the unity of the universe are ideas that have been around for ages and have been well-developed and thoroughly considered by a lot of great thinkers (i won't say philosophers as, for example, gautama buddha and lao tzu both had a lot of good things to say there but aren't usually considered philosophers, as such), but the film doesn't do those ideas justice. however, repeated viewing of such things tends to expose things missed the first time around.
also, i can identify with marky mark's character in a couple of ways, but he was so one-dimensional and irritating.
oh, also, i'm currently reading "the simpsons and philosophy". you might like it.
I've actually read parts of it. Reading "Simpsons and Philosophy" or "The Philosophy of the Matrix" is a little rough since I've read a lot of the source texts. They aren't dumb or anything, it's just smaller capsules of other stuff I've already been exposed to. It's the same with movies like Waking Life. It was almost difficult to enjoy because I had read a few of the "characters" he encounters already and knew a lot of the flaws in their arguments. Like Robert Solomon who has the crazy mustache. He has a terribly unstable philosophy based on a bad read of Nietzsche. (All just my opinion).
I sound like such a nerd. But alas, I love reading things by people complicated german last names.
I actually have books I can lend to anybody who's interested in totally boring german philosophy, Kierkegaard, or Aristotle.
god....i am a nerd.
hmm, i've read bits and pieces of things, and i actually sort of find things that examine those ideas in different ways really great, not only because they're less dry, but because illustrations really work to examine how well an idea works or how it relates to life or fits in. not to mention looking for deeper meaning in those sorts of things is fun.
I think that's what I'm saying though. I do that stuff in my head anyway, since I've been infected with all the source text stuff.
So I just finished the second of two volumes of Derrick Jensen's Endgame. If you have a feeling that something's wrong with...well, everything, you might want to pick it up. It casts a lot of doubt on things you take as truths, but if nothing else it will make you think. It's primarily about how since civilizations inception 6,000 years ago it's done nothing but detach humans from, and destroy, the natural world.
similar to culture of make believe, it sounds like...c.o.m.b. has a lot to do with more personal social topics, though, such as internalizing ideas of race. have you read that?
i should read endgame. derrick jensen is very persuasive because of his emotional style, which i love, but also have to read critically. i think a lot of what he has to say stands well on its own and is perhaps enhanced by the emotion put into it.
I haven't read c.o.m.b. yet, do you have it? You're more than welcome to borrow endgame when you're back in town. DJ's a chatty dude, so those 900 something pages might start getting repetitive towards the end (dams dams salmon rape dams salmon dams rape). It's a good read though.
ha ha, yeah, i know. about the wordiness.
sorry, though, the copy i read isn't mine. powell's might have it...i've read a lot of books there but never bought any. you just have to hang out in the coffee shop now and then.
Half-off topic:

Worksound gallery presents "Intensions"

hahaha is that ryan dunn as in Jackass ryan dunn? I was already gonna go but seeing that and if it is his stuff that's a definite. hahahahahah that's amazing. is he gonna be there. my best friend is seriously in love with him and it's the most disgustingly amusing thing ever!
I'm thinking about sinking this thread now that we have an off-topic category. what do you guys think?
It's not actually the Ryan Dunn from Jackass. Ryan Dunn is a fairly common name. I've actually known three in my life so far. But it would be great if you still came.
And sink away..
Haha, I use to work with a Ryan Dunn. Must be more common than Ithought...
this could start getting used again if conversations in a thread start to go off topic take it here if you don't want to whisper, and want everyone to read/join in. so the threads won't get cluttered.
word
now i don't have to feel guilty for interweb banter.
so if krysten wanted to read our vegas banter, next time we'll just move it here hhaha.
haha.
this is semi bike related.....
I was thinking about all the possibilties a bicycle courier video game could have. someone's gonna make it and it's gonna be riDIC(ulous)

sorry to bring it more off-topic, but I just realized this. earlier today i saw a little broken off piece of a spark plug, and i remembered white folks saying something about how they go through windows really well, so i says to myself, "myself" says i, "that would be nice to have around" so i stuck it in my back pocket and i have been sitting on it all day and my ass is now wrecked. the end.
