i will be flying to san fransisco and rhode island this summer, both of which i need to bring my bike

any ideas, anyone have a case...

if you wanna save money, box it up really nice and send it ahead via amtrack its like $20 to SF...rode iland ...well I never been there so i dunno ...

If you want to travel on airline with your bike and save money, remove the wheels put in one box, put frame fork and others in another box, then there's no charge. Otherwise airlines charge you $80-$100.
Get a fork bridge from your LBS, to go between the fork ends to keep your fork safe. Your LBS should give you one for free, they come on new bikes and are normally thrown away.

If you have wicked cash look at a Richey Breakaway, nice travel bike.

yeah, so i heard you could just get a bike box from LBS and just take it apart and put it in there ... and seeing as it wouldnt be heavier than 75lbs there would be no charge.
i guess if i just fill the thing with bubble wrap it should be great right??????

Keep in mind some airlines charge for additional bags and also for bags over a certain weight. So if you're taking your bike apart and putting it in two or three boxes or checking another bag too, then you're definitely going to have to pay a fee. Most airlines let you check 2 normal sized bags and take one carry on, after that they charge. Some are now charging for anything after one checked bag. Also, they don't always charge based on weight...if it's of awkward size ("oversized baggage") and can't be rolled on the regular baggage claim train but under 60 pounds they still might charge you.

I only know this shit because I started doing mad amounts of research when I wanted to bring my bike with me to SF this past weekend.

i just flew to nyc for the 5 boros ride and brought my bike along. it was $75 bucks each way ouch! i got a free bike box from a local shop(airlines charge 10 bucks for them), broke down the bike and put it into it. the bike and the box were well below the 50 lbs weight limit, however they also have a size limit. no checked item can be measure over 62" in any direction, thats where the fee came from.
my advice would be ship it with ups or send it on a train for a cheaper option. that way you dont come back from your trip feeling like you got bent over a couch.

by the way... how was the ride, i have friends who do it

i build a fortified cardboard box for my bike out of a bike box.
it worked two and from san francisco, and still has some mileage left in it.
