i've heard that this doesnt really work well, makes your brake Squeak and srcews up the paint on the wheel. any thoughts, or first hand experiance?

  1.

it doesnt work well, and you will run down you pads real quick

    its not worth it.

i did on my arrospoke for a day haha cause i had my other bars with a brake on them slipped my mind cause i was drunk so now it has black streaks didn't squeak at all, but am bummed about the black .

  2.

leaves marks, just get them sidewalled.

  3.

it probably depends on if you have a break for emergences/safety/legality or if you plan on using it all the time too.

Save that wheel for the track, or ride brakeless.

    Is this a DeepV?

yeah, deep V. i only use the brake for emergencies so maybe it doesnt matter too much.?

  4.

I would definitely NOT leave it on there for emergencies.
If you rarely use the brake, the chances it will help stop in an "emergency" are pretty low.

Might as well learn to jam your foot between the downtube and the wheel.

The least of your problems is squeaking or messing up the rim. If the pad doesn't make good contact, it's not going to stop shit you can't stop with a skid or a back-pedal.

  5.

I run a brake on a non-machined deep V. It's not there for emergencies (i mean, in most cases that you need to stop really quickly you're on the ground before you can react), but I like having it for when i'm tired. Anyway, it works fine, the pads make contact, and it stops the bike when i need it to. As for squeaking, it does a bit, but it doesn't really matter, you're not riding in a library.

Yeah I run a brake on non-machined wheel and it works fine, I don't use it very often any more, but I was using it while I my legs were getting stronger n stuff. Sure if squeaks a lot when you first use it but the more you use it the less it squeaks. It doesn't do much harm to the wheel. If you have a lighter colored wheel then you'll see streaks but if its darker its harder to tell (mines black and there are two tiny silver patches from the black being rubbed off). Besides that's how wheels were originally made.

it'll work fine, it won't sound or look pretty, but it'll work

  6.

i bought non machined black deep v's and i plan on running a break. I asked around before had and did my research online as well and basically was told to go for it, and depending on how much i intended on using it that it wouldn't make a difference besides a little squeak. I ride break less now and have gotten pretty good at it considering i can't skid or do anything else besides just slowing down. But i do want a break on my new build so i can come to a full stop instead of having to turn the wrong way into traffic to avoid getting hit.

Max- i'm not sure why you would say don't have it for emergencies...that doesn't make sense to me. Thats what my plan is and i've got the green light from anyone i've asked about it. elaborate pls thx. :P

The "painted" rims for brakes have a special treatment to help dissapate heat. but it too comes off. thats not what you asked tho.

deep vees machine for brakes and deep vees not machined have two differences. the non machined of course have paint right there and the machined ones are centerless ground on that surface for flatness.

will it work? yup. does it work well? with real soft pads like the shimanos .. does it mess up the paint? yes eventually does it work better than machined? nope.

Just experience. If you don't use something pretty regularly, the chances you will remember to use it in an emergency are damn low. Reaction time is so fast in an emergency situation that you need to have it in motor memory.

  8.

well obviously it doesn't work better than machined...all i'm saying it that having a break is better than no break regardless of machined or non machined, if someone wants non machined i think it would be wrong to tell them not to have a break just because paint will come off, or it will squeak etc etc.... am i wrong?

i dont care about the paint. i'm saying that its false to believe you can put a brake on your bike and expect your body to use it in split second emergencies, unless you regularly use it.

EDIT: my wheel is machined and my brake barely works when it gets wet. I can't imagine a painted surface.

  10.

point taken. i still think break is better than no break for multiple reasons. also...i wouldn't go around telling people what is true and what is false. let us stick to what we believe to be true and false instead.

    and i'm spent.

People rode non machined rims for ages, old tubular rims are not machined. Paint is a little different than plain aluminum so in the case of deep Vs there might be some loss in performance and some squeaking but in general you don't need machined rim to stop it just makes it easier.

    best rim ever:

It has made my stupid stock alex rim have a stupid black streak on sides.
    But it works fine.
I don't really get why people ride brakeless, I have strong legs and it makes me fucking tired if I backpedal, and skipping, while a lot less strenuous and definitely doable for me, wears away tires fast, which aren't cheap.

  11.

people ride brakeless so they can "flow" I have a brake for law abiding purposes only..

I don't skid at every stop. I just go at a speed where I don't have to stop much and emergency stop rarely. yes I slop ( slow, look and go) red lights and yes i ride downtown and innereastside mostly

backpedaling makes you tired? does anyone else have this problem? I don't.

And tires are free...at least the ones in the freebox are..

  12.

You get more tired if you try backpedaling by pushing down. Instead, try pulling up on the forward side.
It forces both legs to backpedal.

Thanks for the tip Max. My average speed is around 19-23MPH, so having to slow down that much at every intersection to avoid death is what kills me, which is why a brake is good for me.
    Edit
I tried the pull up method today, and damn, that is way easier on the legs.

Yeah, I agree. You're not going to think to use it when you only have half a second, if that, to think. You're going to try to stop the way you usually do (motor memory). Not to mention, if you only have a front brake and you slam on it in an emergency situation...well that just sounds risky to me.

Obviously I have a front brake...but that's because I'm the shittiest cyclist ever and for some reason I love to throw myself in front of cars. Not to mention I can barely stop even with a brake. So, anyone wanna go for a ride sometime?

theres one at each citybikes location that has good tires sometimes,

CCC on alberta always has 3-4 good 700c's (i got 2 sets of stelvios there one red one blue 90% tread left)

    northportland bike works sometimes

just only take what you need, and putting stuff back is good karma...I put stuff there regularly (you never know, whats junk to you is a score to someone else)
