so a lot of my friends' bikes have really narrow riser bars. i am thinking of just getting a really long stem and putting some handlebar tape on the extension. i figure i could steer by kind of using it like a rudder. has anyone tried this? i think it would be wrad!

my question is this: is 140mm the longest stem available?

this is definitely possible but only if you stand of your stem and seat, thus 'surfing' your bike. it takes some practice but you will be rollin' in style in no time. if you got tired of this though, you could always just stick a finger in the clamp and call it good.

I don't get it. Why do you even need the stem? Just get a good grip on the steerer tube and you should be fine. I mean, shit, it's called a steerer tube for a reason. You'll drop some weight that way too.

haha no bars means no bar clipping, all you have to do is shave down a couple pounds on your waist and you can go through any gap

Damnit. There was this crazy Euro dude who descends huge stuff with no bars and I guess no brakes. I wish I could find his site again. Insane. All balance.
