    alex and max and others?

i am looking for a photoblog site which can provide easy GUI backend, webhosting and site templates. Something like https://photographers.squarespace.com/

I am a pro-photographer on the side but I feel restricted by sites like flickr, etc for porfolio-level work. In anticipation of the images i will be capturing on my trip to Alaska, it would be nice to have a web presence solution dialed..

    any input?

Yea, you have a few options.

What are you looking to pay and how good do you want it to look?

Squarespace is neat but it was major compatibility issues. However if it's just like people with money and brand new computers who you want to look, it really wouldn't be an issue.

Wordpress is a hugely great method too. I use it to build almost everything nowadays. You can probably find a company or person who does stuff like that.
For instance I run an "artists package" for $400, I'm sure others do cheaper.
I'm sure if you hook up alex or me with some bucks (not much) we can give you space on a hosting server and a WP install.

If you search "wordpress photoblog theme" in google I'm sure you'd find some cool photoblogging themes already built.

is there really a need to pay for this service when something like http://www.pixelpost.org/ is free?

  1.

I'm trying to think of a good analogy.

    Imagine racing at alpenrose.

You can buy a bike on your own for $$$ or use a bike there for almost free.
The difference is that when you get into racing, you'll want to have control on changing out components and adjusting the bike to better fit you. Something you can never do with a rental there.

    That's like these websites.
Something like pixelpost will get you up and running, but there are big design and functionality walls that you will never be able to jump.

I'm not trashing on pixelpost or any other free service. You can get free wordpress at wordpress.com
Those are great services if the limitations are not an issue.

Thanks for your suggestions max. hugely insightful... this seems like a huge commitment!

so to clarify, pixelpost, worldpress and blogger, etc all require off-site, 3-rd party image hosting right?

  2.

To be honest, I'm not sure much anymore. I haven't used either recently.

However I think wordpress.com allows on-site image hosting to an extent.

Once again though. If you want to do on-site hosting I'm sure alex or I can hook you up with an install and some space.

    MIN,

Can you point me to a photoblog site out there that has a similar look and function to what you are planning on doing?

    Min -
Totally off topic, but where are you going to be in Alaska? I saw on a previous post that you were getting married there. Is your fiance from there?

Just wondering as I grew up in Anchorage and still have family (My dad) up there as well. Let me know if you want/need recommendations on what to check out (granted, you will be busy getting married)

back on topic - I'm not photographer, but I have a friend that uses Smugmug. http://www.smugmug.com/

hey porter, my fiance grew up in alaska so we are having a very small wedding up there. we are going to get married on a mountain top in girdwood (alyeska resort) and spending some time in homer in a cabin, fairbanks in a hotel and wasilla, which is where the in-laws live. this will be my second visit up there. i went several years ago by plane and drove down the alcan hwy over 5 days (2700miles!).

i expect to get some great photos up there because we will be doing a lot of backpacking, skiing and bike touring over the 2-weeks.

Nice - I basically spent every winter weekend in Girdwood skiing as a kid. Good times and should be a beautiful spot for the wedding.

Bringing/access to a mountain bike? If so there are lots of great trails all over the Chugach.

I've done that drive many many times both up and down - everything from a week long caravan with a bunch of friends heading down to college in WA & OR to a solo 'sprint' up with only my dog as a companion over a weekend (left Seattle Friday afternoon and got into Anchorage on Sunday). That by the way really sucked.

Have fun up there, once the slop melts, spring is such a beautiful time of year.
