2" would work are you planning on chopping them down?

it depends on your stem rise unless you are going for a tarck bike look. here is a 1" rise, not much.

  2.

i'd go 1.5-2" no more. too much looks weird. i'd try and get comfy with spacers under the stem on a threadless set up , rise (plus or minus) of the stem. Then if you still need to go up drop $$ on risers. Flat bars can be had by the dozen. I have both black ano'd and silver, both flat and 3 degree swept.

I used a 18" wide flat with a 3degree sweep and liked it, but went back to horns fr more hand positions. But the trick I found was to put the bars on with the sweep going forward rather than sweeping to the back...works very nice for riding in the upright "town and country" position. easier on the wrists as the sweep comes in right whee your pointer finger starts. sounds kinda counter-intuitave but its a go, really it is.

Yes. I like the narrow look, purely fashion over function!

Not so fast... Narrow bars are pretty functional in an urban setting where you may (or, in my case, enjoy to) scoot between cars.

Haha, fair enough. I see some heads back home with (flat) bars soo narrow that their Ourys touch the stem... that shit is fucking ridiculous. But whatever, I'm sure Orange20 (Diesel, Undefeated, and Greyone) appreciates their business...

no joke this dude that parks out in front of powells has his cut down 2" on each side. never seen it on the road though

i've seen that one sean. crazy

i would say for him to cut them wide enough get used to the handling, cut them a little more, repeat until he's happy at where they're cut.
its hard to get used to tight handling like that right off the bat, don't kill yourself for the fashion.

  5.

whats the best way to cut them

mark em off and hacksaw them.

  6.

"measure twice, cut once", thanks dad

that whole "narrow as fuck" shit is dumb. people do it because they like how it looks, if they say its to get through tight spaces they're either lying to you or themselves.

lets say you have oury-stem-oury flats. measure that out, then measure your bag, hips, or shoulders. you might get the front of you through those cars but the rest isn't going to cut it

    get that shit outta here

Mine is 100% fashion, and I am comfortable with that

i have risers but i like them wider, its easier to climb and it takes a lot of getting used to when they're cut real narrow

Mine were 50cm wide and other than offering only one hand position, it was good for everything. Hill climbing leverage was decent but better with bullhorns. Now I use porteur bars for more hand positions and a heads up position. I feel like my new bike handles like a bike wth risers and a 40cm stem a la most pista concept tarck bike builds.

i just measured mine and there about 12 or 13 inches wide total. a little bit skinnier than my shoulders but i have had to turn sideways to get through some spots. havent had trouble climbing or controlling my bike and iv had a hell of a lot of fun seeing how small of a gap i can get through. id say its fairly practical. and when they were wider i primarily rode with my hands about 4 inches away from the stem anyway.

no worries. at least someone else understands!

  8.

I would advise against using a hacksaw. Most people get pretty frustrated, break blades etc.. without a saw guide.

Try my tried and true method, works for steer tubes too...

If you can use a 1" tubing cutter, they cost $4.99 at harbor freight and look like this:

    http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=40913

Then use a bastard file on the ID, the OD will be smooth due to the way the cutter does it's thang.

If you don't wanna invest in these tools, whisper me.

remember measure twice, cut once. not the other way around...

I second the use of a tubing cutter they work great. They cut straight, you don't have to worry about the blading walking while your trying to cut, and not much finish work.

  9.

yeah i use a tube cutter but you gotta take your time otherwise you will "mushroom" the end.

  10.

one of the rollers opposite the blade should be completely flat, the other has a cut out. the cut out is there to accept the "mushroomed" materiel. this roller should be placed on the portion of the bar thats getting cut off, ....does that make any sense?
