In reading the "favorite shop" thread, I've noticed how many of you are bummed on the service you're getting at your LBS.
I propose then, a proper pdxfixed wrench night. Bring your measly tools! Put your bike in a stand! Drink beer and learn!
I'm thinking informal seminars on simple stuff like headset/bb maintenance, wheel truing (white folks?), managing that pesky conversion, etc.
We all have knowledge that all of the rest of us can use.
Ideas?
I lub this idea. I know how to maintenance most the stuff on my beater conversion ('cept for that fucked up finger-tightening headset) but i'm fairly unfamiliar with newer componentry maintenance. Working on my bikes was my number one hobby (read: time sink) for the first semester, but now that I got me a legit tarck bike, I can't monkey with the parts no more! Home-brewed wheel truing would be an incredible skill to have. I have some knowledge of obsolete-ish stuff (tightening cones, loose bearing BB maintenance, the list goes on...) Plus we can all ride around on our squeaky clean bikes afterwards. I also bring an extensive collection of shop rags to the table.
I would really enjoy this. Friday afternoon?
I was hoping for a midweek evening, depending on what works for people. I'm open for anything, but I work until 3-ish...
wednesday nights= no homework for me. I would really prefer this night to any other. in fact, wednesday is the only midweek night thats open for me.
sounds like a good call. weekdays are fine but wednesday, thrusday and friday are track.
STINE:sounds like a good call. weekdays are fine but wednesday, thrusday and friday are track.
I know, issues.
How about Tuesday, 6pm, somewhere on the eastside.
i hear wednesdays are the new saturdays
bryan.:i hear wednesdays are the new saturdays
And HED3 is the new Aeropsoke...
hey just sayin. wednesdays are happenin'
bryan.:hey just sayin. wednesdays are happenin'
Of course. No disrespect... just trying to be (failed at being) funny.
Gotta love Wasted Wednesdays... ohhh... Wrench Wednesdays! Yay!
How about Tuesday, 6pm, somewhere on the eastside.
Please.
Sounds like a great idea. I'm usually busy all week with either class til 7 or work til 9 though.
I think there are a lot of people who are taking the track classes on Wednesdays so that's probably a bad day. I could go on any Monday or Tuesday after 6.
The seminar idea sounds awesome. I have no idea how to do a lot of simple things (repack bearings, service/install a HS or BB) and I'd really like to learn. Weekends are better for me just 'cause I'm in school but I might be able to come weeknights except thursday. Maybe we could do this during the day on Saturday or Sunday afternoon.
This sounds great. Mondays are shit for me, got work and then class till 9pm, The rest of the week is good for me. Does anyone have a shop/garage with tools etc?
I like this. I'm free after 8:00 PM on Mondays & Tuesdays and after 7:00 PM on Wednesdays and Fridays. Maybe a Saturday afternoon would work better for everyone...?
i have some tools...no shop/garage though. i am happy to lend them out, i may or may not be able to make it depending on when it is scheduled. but i think its a great idea. too bad i don't have anything that needs working on right now though...unless i can scrounge up the rest of the parts i need for my build.
I've got a ok selection of tools, and do most of my own work. I don't have a good place to host but would be happy to come help out.
the other option in the future is bike farm. www.bikefarm.org
you pay a membership(monthly, yearly or per session) and they teach you how to do stuff. I learned wheel truing. once you learn stuff you can just use the tools.
some of the guys aren't super knowledgeable but I have only been there once so I can't judge by one experience. there is a guy there(david?) who knows his shit.
I think I have everything we'd need to work on fixed gears bikes 'cept campy bottom bracket tools. I only have shimano and raceface adapters. If we did a conversion we'd need the tool that removes the cogset, and theres a bunch of diffrent ones. luckily city bikes is open till 7.
Tuesdays are tight for me, I do the CCC thing tuesdays at 7pm, But i could skip one or two.
Ideally, we also have food and beers.
i really like this idea.
kind of clueless on most things besides getting my tire changing time down
wednesdays sound great
any day of the week would be great (so, sure, wednesday)
lets relly get on this
so i've got tools and stand, but two sets would be ideal. come thru
who's got digs? space for 5-7 people it looks like and enough space in the fridge for that much beer. (be sure and clear with the S/O if you know what i mean)
Bring a half rack if your not bringing tools or providing said space, 8.99 for pbr..or a just a 40 if your poor like me
I've got a conversion that needs put together (BB, headset, everything really)
I also have a wheel that needs built up, I can run thru lacing, tensioning and truing that too if we have enough time. nothing tricky 3 cross with double butted Zicrals
Lets do this, this week.
Tuesday? I'll skip CCC for this
Weds, ideal for me plus more time to get shit together.
BUT lets not be indecisive, lets do it like nike. If i've pissed you off heres yur chance to tell me off in person LOL. No, really just come out and see were all really cool dude-bros like yourself.
set a time and date and ill try to be there
yeah, whoever has the space (definitely not me) pick a date and we'll try to show up.
Wednesday works for me. I have a studio but my bed (if you can call it that) is really just an inflatable mattress, so once that is moved out of the way I have a pretty decent amount of space. And I have several PBR already sitting in my fridge. I could do 7:30.
Oh, I live downtown.

There's no way we'll fit in there... But I'm down with tuesday whitefolks. I'm ready to learns..

Really? If there's no bed and no couch? I had a party with 40 people in there once...packed as fuck, but still fit.
Did people piss using catheters?
jvandub:Did people piss using catheters?
Oh, yeah, now that I think about it, they did.
I guess I've kinda dropped the ball on this while everyone else has stepped up, so here's the plan. My house, 6 pm, Tuesday the 20th. Gives everyone time to get it together, including moi.
Some dirtbags stole my truck last summer (welcome to Portland!) and I lost ALL of my Park tools. I'll get with whitefolks about a stand (I think we live close), and anything else we might need. If the weather is nice I'll have the grill going, so bring a slab of something if you're the hungry type.
Whisper for the addy.
Aw, damn, can't do Tuesdays.
What's a good non-beer, non-tool thing to bring?
Yourself, your bike, questions, answers, and a bag of ice.
toa3t:What's a good non-beer, non-tool thing to bring?
Mike's Hard Lemonade. That's definitely not beer.
me
toa3t:What's a good non-beer, non-tool thing to bring?
meat if you do that, 2 packages of tempeh soaking in soy sauce and garlic powder if you don't
yups, I'll bring my stand it's not very pimp though it's only a ps-9 but it works fine. And tools..got 'em
The conversion bike I already put together didnt hear form anyone ...so who's gonna have a build to do? or just do some maintainance? Some one's gotta do a BB swap and some chain breaking. maybe some gearing changes...
i'll hold off putting this wheel together and bring my truing stand.
Any other fun activities? pin the tail on the honkey?
Were just gonna go with Tues the 20th and hope you all show..other wise were gonna be diddling our doodles till eternity and get no wrenching done. I really hope I'm free that night as jenn just hooked me up with a Jobby-job at laurelwood.
Work is good for you. Builds character, or something. Congrats.
We can always do the tarck/track/tarck on my bike which invloves lockring, cog, chain, possibly chainwheel, bars and stem which is no big deal unless you take into account the "adjustment" of a completely shagged Miche headset. We'll have plenty to do.
Shit, I'll even set up the rollers so anyone curious can try them out.
it's on mofoes!! tuesday the 20th 6pm...whisper Freebird for the addy..
Speaking of wrenching, I'll be ready to build my track bike up the weekend of the 23rd. Still down to do it at your place, Doug?
VVVVgood cause i cantVVVVV
Looks like I can probably go after all. And I'll bring a couple of beers.
Is this still going on tomorrow? I can bring what tools I have.
yes, yes and yes...
I'll be home from work at 5 or so on tuesday, whisper me your ph# and i'll call you. I'm at 32nd and Glisan. I think jeezy is gonna need his wheels trued so theres that. Anyone need a conversion done?
I have to shoot some other shit tomorrow night.
Otherwise I'd be here.
Have fun peoples.
Still happening, for those interested. 6 pm @ 4001 se Ankeny. I'll be providng a bbq and cooler, you will provide eats and drinks if you're so inclined. The rollers will be set up in the driveway. Good times.
I somehow never got around to reading this thread till just now. Sounds sweet. Ill see about breaking from work for a bit to come check it out and try and learn some new stuff.
One of my wheels is slightly out of true, I would love to learn how to correct it.
Im sure there is a place for beer somewhere between here and your place.
Would geared things be welcome at this fine gathering?
Yass.
