    I don't think it does.

Portland's not perfect, but it's pretty damn good.

You're just damn spoiled coming from Holland. I stayed for a month or so in Hilversum (outside of Amsterdam) and it was bike paradise. Way more bikes on the road than cars, every street had a bike lane (separated from the cars by a curb or trees)...the US has a long way to go, but compared to most cities, Portland isn't doing too bad.

all i know is that coming from vegas this place is amazing for bikes.

in vegas you couldn't cross the street at a crosswalk when you have the right away without almost getting hit, and if you do it's not the drivers fault. let a lone bikes in the street, you HAVE to ride on the sidewalk in most areas as speed limits for most of the streets are 40-45 unless your in a residential.

so coming to portland from that this is a haven for bikes.

I lived in vegas for two years and built my first conversion there. It is very scary but you don't have to worry about cops at all.
there's no such thing as running red lights though....it's absolutely not possible.

    jenn where did you live?

university crest for me!!! and also trop and warm springs

yah it's mandatory to do a two-three second delay after the light turns green there just to make sure someone isn't flying through at like 60 mph. and plus trying to run lights that are anywhere from 4-8 lanes deep plus a median is just not even a question. it's more like good luck even making it to the median.

I was actually rather interested in reading their conversation and I'm glad they didn't whisper it. Seems like talking about biking in Vegas isn't really a personal conversation...But thanks for being kinda creepy.

It is flat out bullshit. I don't care how much bike infrastructure there is. The cops are up our ass all the time, and then when one of us gets hit and/or dies they look the other way. Until that shit changes, the Platinum Rating is not worth a shit.

Were the bike boxes a result of the accidents last Fall, or was it in the works before that?

I've had no issue with cops here, and as for deaths there have been hardly any.

Show me a city with cops that don't act the way you described.

Or are you suggesting that there should be no platinum rating?

Let's ask some ACTUAL bike messengers about PDX's finest. And where are the vehicular homicide charges, or at least gross negligence in the death of Brett Jarolimek.

Sorry but you bitches are obedient little rule followers on your bikes if you haven't been fucked with by the cops. It's summer soon go to Zoobomb, and feel the harassment. Might as well wear red in a Crips neighborhood.

I can ride like a fuckin' loon in front of cops up here in Seattle, and never raise an eyebrow, because the cops have bigger fish to fry, as well they should in fucking PDX too.

  4.

In all my experiences with the cops, the only time they have ever been nice is when a riot cop asked me where I got my wheels on the way to May Day. The rest of my experiences have involved being beaten, hit with a bike, trampled by a horse, and maced at various protests, usually while following the cop's instructions. Then you factor in the death of James Chasse and other police killings, and as skidmark said, the lack of charges in Brett's case, and I think the bad outweighs the good as far as the PPD goes. This is not to say they are all evil, just that a lot of them should not be carrying weapons and enforcing the law.

When some guy in the south park blocks doesn't approach me in the middle of the afternoon trying to sell me crack, then I'll know the cops have enough time on their hands to be handing out tickets for riding brakeless.
