    white folks:

do it championship style, brake ok, no gears

fake package pick ups and drops( big boxes, tubes, heavy legal folders, etc..,)

do it on a sunday when less people will get run over or ticketed for slopping red lights.

that would be fun, lemme in Jen

+1. throw some randome file boxes full of bricks in there!

  2.
    ted:

Pick up and deliver is impractical. Think about how many things checkpoints would have to keep near them so people could pick it up and take it with them. Also, how are the judges supposed to know what "stuff" is legit at the end of the race? Is it going to have some special marking on it? Lame. It will also take up just as much time to stop, pick an object of your choice, securely place it in your bag, and then continue to ride.

To whoever is sad about the washington park checkpoint for whatever reason, (too far, I got lost, etc.) that is the idea of the race. You are supposed to prove you can ride hard and that you know your way around the city.

M2M was my first Alleycat, but I thought it was great. I can understand minors being upset they weren't allowed into the final destination, so I concur that a house would be a more suitable endpoint.

Looking forward to the next one.

pick up and deliver can work in a race setting just fine.

I did a race once where there was a pick up, and the guys who got there first got the top of the stack of boxes i.e. all the heavy, unmanageable shit (this was like, the third stop out of 12), but as the slowpokes and drunks trickled through, the packages got lighter and smaller.

It's good to make people suffer. If you can't suffer, you might as well buy an electra townie and ride the sidewalks in your flip flops.

that's what i'm saying... glory through suffering... you think to yourself how hard it is at the time but when it's all over and you're having a beer with the other people that raced it, you all feel superbe.

well chaz is moving so someone else can have a chance to be "chaz."

  3.

but that's kinda what white folks and i are getting at. some of the young'uns that can ride fast and split traffic will never know what it's like to go from 19th and johnson to 4th and stark with 50 pounds on your back and 50 pounds on your bars with a bag full of other filings with an hour to do all of them.

I wasn't disagreeing on that at all, just poking fun. trust me I haven't said much on this thread, but I'm sitting back and seeing what everyone has to say.

  4.

well hey jenn i've been lazy and haven't gone out to your place in a bit. no doubt we need to do some serious hangin'....but yeah, this race interests me and certan attempts to use a race to replicate messenger work in a measly couple of hours interest me....

hey, lets just not even have a bike race. that might be kinda hard, and people will get really tired having to ride bikes that cant even coast. thats just ridiculous.

  6.

its weird, my bike doesnt even have any brakes either. i wonder if that can be fixed?

ah, zak could if he wasn't taking the year off alley cats....i think he is focusing on track or something instead...but he and chas (it's with an s) could definitely go head to head had they the chance.

  8.

i totally screwed up that sentence, I didn't mean to say Chaz with an S could take a 16" strap on, I meant Chaz with an S would win first place with one of those moving boxes that are 16" cubes strapped to his bag.

Thats cool that Chas if off to live the dream so to speak. And Zak taking the year off. That just means it will go back to sharky winning 'em all like it used to be.

But, all snarkyness aside anyone got a good idea to make it harder for the "hardcore" and fairer for the "whippersnappers"?

It'd be nice if they could place in the prizes as well.

One race, differernt classes @ sign-up.

    under 21
    21-30
    Over 30...
    Brakes, no brakes..

That should cover it....prizes for the sub-groups and of course the Big one for 1st no matter what age or class. If the winner was under 21 with no brakes he only would get the 1st prize...Sound fair?

ugh. i don't see why you guys are trying to segregate this stuff. it's the way of the world that the older guy with stronger legs and more experience is going to win. of course there's exceptions. why try to level the playing field? if you want to win, train. let the youngins win the footdown or trick contest.

  9.

i think it should just be one race. its fun even if i cant win

If you want you could just offer different places without segregating, like one for Overall, First Man, First Woman, First Out-of-towner, but I like one race better

    no that's called saran wrap

ok, then I was trying to rectify some of the gripes i heard after the last one, maybe that was all the shock of seeing in person just how fast them messenger duders really are. I know before my first alley cat I though I was quick shit, after well...not so much:)

So if it's one category, brakes allowed..lets keep it fixed only i dont want the sound of someones freewheel or freehub throwing off my concentration :)lol

no, really just no gears for real at least.

    brakes optional

    helmet optional

    a pickup and deliver stage

how about some funny shit too. i did one where you had to get married..thats was fun..everyone was trying to get girls off the street outside this bar in SOMA to "marry them" it was hilarious.. I just grabbed another racer dude cuz gay marriage was legal in SF then.

anyone do any alley cats with fun sht like that? lets hear it

some of the best races i've seen are where you can ride whatever bike you want...bmx, double talls, cyclocross, track bikes, fixies with brakes, ss and so forth... encourages more people to ride and have fun.

race theme, heres one. food for a charity

each rider has to bring $15
riders are given lists of food needed.
check points are at grocery stores as well as other place.
end of the race, bags are emptied and the food is donated to the chosen charity.
