So did not really know where else to post this and didn't want to start a new thread....but as I said a few months ago when I signed up here my girlfriend my baby and myself will be moving out your way in the near future. We are gonna be coming out that way mid June and have a few places we are looking at in the Beaverton area...would you folks say this is a decent area to raise a little one? From what the city website says its filled with parks and awesomeness but would like to hear from real people not advertising specialists. Thanks in advanced!

Hmm well we are mainly looking at beaverton because a lot of the apartments are cheaper and just getting out there and getting settled cheaper would be easier for us. We have not really looked into schools yet because our little one will only be a year old by the time we move. What are some of the reasons Beaverton is terrible?

Beaverton is fine, just keep in mind it's very suburban. The schools are pretty good I think, but I haven't done much research on the matter. It's slightly safer, but also pretty devoid of anything interesting going on at all. Ask SkidMark, he seems to be the resident defender of the suburbs.

Beaverton ain't SO bad, and if you want to do all the cool portland stuff, it's still within easy distance by max or car. Biking isn't even out of the question. I don't know much about parks in Beaverton, but there are plenty in Portland proper to go around.

Beaverton has a much better school system than Portland. Better funded and with more extracurricular activities and AP studies. My step-daughters go/went to school here: Mountain View Middle School, Aloha High School, and Merlo Station High School. Nothing particularly sucks about living out here, except an absence of decent night life. Anyone who says it sucks here just grew up out here as a teenager pining for life in the big city, which Portland is a poor substitute for. Either that or they've never set foot in Beaverton/Aloha/Hillsboro. You are only 10 miles from downtown, and public transit is available. Where I live you could leave your garage door open and everything would still be there in the morning. I could leave my bikes in the yard like my neighbors do and they would still be there. Try that in North Portland. For the most part the traffic moves faster. Because people have kids they are wary of people on bicycles (or so it seems).

Portland likes to think of itself as a city, but that really just the tiny downtown and the rest is a tightly packed suburb. If you find a cheap place it will be because the landlord doesn't do shit to maintain the property (that is in a state of disrepair) and because everything that isn't nailed down gets ripped off.

If you are too cool for school and want to be immersed in hipster central and living amongst a bunch of self-absorbed *DINKs by all means live in Portland. If you want a decent place to raise kids and a quiet place to go home to at night live in Beaverton, and commute into the city for fun time.

*Dual Income No Kids

I would compare Beaverton to living in the Inland Empire (San Dimas, Pomona, Claremont, Montclair, Upland....) except traffic is slower, because Oregonians can't push down hard enough on the gas pedal and often forget what a green light means. This is why I stopped riding a motorcycle and got a bicycle, so it's not all that bad.

Also a lot more people are using bikes, and the public seems to be accepting of this. I think it's because it often ends up being a family activity. There are tons of parks out here that don't get much use, and new paved MUP's are being built to add to the existing system. Personally I like the option of not dealing with cars if I don't have to. There is also a very tiny bit of legal singletrack in Jenkins Estate, about as much as there is in Forest Park if you count that illegal trail that was just discovered.

Beaverton is to Portland as Ballard is to Seattle.

I would say that skidmark's description is probably true, but I just find places like sellwood to be SO much more pleasant. Architecture, Parks, Nature, You're right by the waterfront, which makes for excellent walks etc. And, like Miguelaron said, you can definitely find a house to rent or a 1 bed apt. for that amount of money. No matter what people tell you about 'safety,' Portland is INCREDIBLY safe when compared to almost any city of its size, and while there is bike theft, if you just keep your things IN your garage, you mostly likely will not have any problems. For me, living in a place with character is important. coming from living in suburbia where no house is older than 30 years and it's 'safe,' I still had bikes stolen from my driveway.

some examples of sellwood/milwaukee living in your price range:
http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/apa/1619036157.html

Hello All-

I'm in Tahoe still, but moving back to town at the end of April to reenter the academic life. My fixed gear/track experience consists of buying a single speed cross bike, racing it a few times, flipping the rear wheel and removing the brakes, racing it a few more times, and then parting it down to be as close to track as possible, despite the sloppy clearance. I rode around Portland with some of you for a bit, did a couple of sprints (poorly), attended the first backyard blam and enjoyed it a ton! I plan to get a track bike and try the newbie days at Alpenrose this Spring/Summer, and will be getting back into single speed cyclecross as well. I won't post bike pictures, because my bike is nothing special to look at. I guess my main purpose in posting is to reconnect and hopefully I'll be hanging out with some of you, riding bikes and raising hell, in a couple of months!
