Hey I'm going out to the track on Thursday night for the kilo / 500 m time trial. Anyone else showing? Its a good idea to do this one even if you're slow like me. You can track your progress based upon your time throughout the season.
I also plan on frequenting Fast Twitch Fridays, unfortunately I will be out of town for this first one. Sad to be missing it.
YAY TRACK!!
Fuck yeahhhh, man. I'd go out on Thursday but I have class. I'll be there Friday night for sure. I'm bummed you won't be. The following week for sure though.
I have to watch lost on thursdays.
edit. eh maybe I'll watch it online.

We should go out there together on Friday.
if you guys plan on racing after you do a Wednesday night track class be sure to get your OBRA license.
^ I'm going to borrow your rollers and do my own time trials while watching lost if anyone is interested.

oooh! fun! what time is lost on? If its later both track and lost of possible.
Id like to go. Ill have to play it by ear depending on work. If it rains out track dev class on Wed Ill def try harder to make it.
I think Lost starts a 8 but I've got some catching up to do with the series.
playground_terror:oooh! fun! what time is lost on? If its later both track and lost of possible.
10!!!i guess i can do both
What time do Thursday's trials start? I get out of class at 7, doubt I'll make it.
Joe. Let's have a Lost party at your house. Sean should come, too. I'll bring beer.
what time on thursday and friday does the racing start?
RACE TIME
finally
so yeah, thursday kilo/time trail action, friday = fast twich by bike central and saturday is the Eric Kautsky memorial race
i've been hittin the track for several months now but i'm probably gonna cruise to the wed. class to see whats up/get a different perspective. everyone should go out there and get sweaty.
Here is a link to the schedule http://www.obra.org/track/schedule/2008/index.html
Both start at 6:30 but be there by 5:30 ish if you plan to race.
Racing generally goes on till 8 ish if i remember correctly. So if you're just watching you dont need to show up at 6:30.
Thursday Night Racing
Registration starts at 5:00 pm
6:30 pm to dusk every Thursday unless it rains
Fast Twitch Fridays
Registration starts at 5:00 pm
Racing Starts at 6:30 PM
$10 entry fee
This coming Friday is free for women to race.
I believe you're required to go to Wednesday night's class in order to race on Friday. But not positive about that. I thought I heard Meg say that on Saturday.
Mike Murray posted the schedule for this week on the OBRA list. Thursday TTs are going to start at 6:00p to accommodate the large number of riders they expect. Jen also said that the Friday session will be flying 200s, but they're going to start at the regular 6:30p time.
Candi and Jen usually post the Thursday and Friday schedules that morning on the OBRA list, respectively.
6PM, damn not much time to warm up! Oh well...
playground_terror:6PM, damn not much time to warm up! Oh well...
I just found out i have thursday off so I will be there to watch you rule the track from start to finish!
OK, depending on how the Wednesday class goes I might try to make it out for the Kilo. I've never trained for such short of a distance and will suck horribly but it should be a good benchmark.
exactly. thats why i'm doing it. To see how much i've improved by the end of the season.

wow sweet! Well let me know if you want to drive there with me, or if you are riding.

Same here.
How quick does 500 and 1000m go by? What do people plan on using for gearing?

Sweet! I get out of class at 7 PM, but you should hang out with us afterwards, too.
the track is 268.43 meters around. So its a little less than two laps around for the 500...really really short. I have no idea about gearing. I just use whatever someone tells me to use. I have 46 / 16 on there now.

Haha, just trust whatever Zak says. Plus if you kept it at 14, you wouldn't get to have a sweet pink link, mang!
my pinky linky? hahah.....dirty
playground_terror:my pinky linky? hahah.....dirty
Yeah, Sean's kinda gross. And I mean that in the most loving way.
I like that ratio though, so yuh!
Cool. Its a timed form a standing start I assume and not a rolling start?
I have a 48 up front and only own 19t, 17t and 15t cogs. I think I want to try the 17 for the 500m and the 15 for the kilo. Unless someone advises me otherwise.
hmmm i could be wrong but i think the 500 might be a rolling start with a free lap. I can't remember. Maybe i'm thinking of the 200...
200 without a pace would be ridiculous.
The 500/kilo are both standing starts. 200s are flying starts. You get 3 total laps, and the last 200m are for time.
Let me tell you, the kilo is the most painfull thing in cycling. You will fell good for the first 2, 2.5 laps. But then it feels like you had a piano dropped on you.
The 500 is a little better, but only the gals get to ride it (unless you are over 55).
Cant really help with gears. The idea though is to have a gear that you can keep spinning when your legs want off the ride.
And I'll be there. I wont be riding (kilo isnt my thing), but just watching/chilling/ cheering on y'all :)
oh, and for the non-paced 200. There is a standing 250, but not really done at Alpenrose. Although that might change this year as I did one at Nationals last year, and it was one of the most fun events EVAR!!!
hmmm...do you think i should change my gear ratio for the 500? its 46 / 16 now. I have a 15 and a 14 i can use instead...
Others may disagree, but I would make sure you are at top spin and maintaining speed with the ratio first.
I have no idea what you run that ratio like, but if its not too much spin for you and you maintain your speed, then keep it.
Once again correct me if I'm wrong someone,
but the two things to watch out for with your ratio should be something like this:
Cadence: top speed is spinning too fast for you.
Speed Maintain: too much resistance causing inconsistent speed.
I'd say you would be ok to throw on the 15. 77 is pretty small for a 500, but you might want to ask zak as I dont know your style (mashing/spinning ect)
Max: You have it right on. It's great talking with folks who usually dont ride a geared bike. On a fixed gear, a higher cadence=more speed. Then you have to find that gear that works for you to keep you and your max cadence. Whereas people on geared bikes just think that the bigger gear you have on, the faster you go. boo
Yea, ask Zak, you ride with him enough.
Thanks, I thought it was something like that.
haha actually Zak and I never ride together. But i'm fairly certain he is observant of my "style" while i'm riding or so it seems. I like what i'm running now, it felt really good out there on Saturday..but i agree and think i could handle the 15 instead.
I'm interested to see what other beginner womens times are. I feel like a lot of the other beginners are going to be fast since they race road or cross...where as I am only doing track and don't have as much training under my belt. So hopefully there will some others like myself out there to compare my time to.

that will give you some idea about the time. The race starts a little out of turn 2. Start as hard as you can. You will get the bell as you are under the alpenrose sign in the middle of turn 1/2 (thats right, the race ends in the middle of the turn). Then you have 1 lap to go. You will really start of feel it as you go into turn 3. Just try and keep the legs moving.
Here is a good crash corse on standing starts:

Thanks for all of the info, Kevin. It's really nice to have someone here with so much knowledge of the track. Really helpful.
yeah thats great Kevin thanks! I just went through that Standing Start tutorial. I'm super pumped...i might try and go out there for some trial runs after the class tomorrow night. :P
Haha any time guys. With any luck it wont be raining tommrow. Least not enough to can the class. But its sorta lookin like that. Thurs looks good, as does Sat
Hell yeah, I want to get out there so badly. I'm crossing my fingers for no rain. Fuck that noise.
I may be driving from Eugene to come out on Thursday, not sure yet. It would totally suck if we got there and it started raining >:[
I am so excited for you keven...can't wait til thursday.
oh and I will most likely ride out there because I am not going to be racing I feel obligated to.
I'm hoping 49x15 is cool. 49x16 = spinning out between turn 2 and 3 if I dip down from the wall into sprinter's lane.
The normal range out there (for sprinters) is 88-92. Cant talk for the prusuit or mass start folk. I think you should be ok as long as your legs know what a 90 feels like

hehe...thanks for your support..i'll need it! i'm amped you're so excited to get out there!
omg
im leaving from the Eastside on Water Avenue if anyone else needs a lift out there tonight.
nervous...
and didn't get enough sleep last night...
beh.
Im out for the sprints. Dont think I can leave early enough. But I may ride my road bike up there to check it out for a few.
