i found a motobecane mirage at the goodwill outlet...

(this is where you ask, why the fuck you telling me this?)

with a white perforated leather turbo saddle in pretty good shape!

so i see it and try to sneakily take off either the seatpost or just the saddle, bring it my allen kit. wait, no, it takes the oldfashioned kind of wrench, fuck! so i head home, get an adjustable wrench, get to work on it, get told by a guy there "hey, no taking apart our bikes, you have to buy it as is, but since you're here often i'll let you work on it as long as you put everything back as it was"

so i take out the seatpost holding screw that's probably bend a good 20 degrees, then see that the post is held in quite tightly by some combo of rust, dirt, and just being jammed the fuck in there. and the bolts on the rail clamps are awkwardly hidden under the turbo so i have basically no access. i show the guy the useless screw and he tells me to put it back anyway, i whack it back in with my wrench handle, then leave.

(oh yea - they were asking $150 for the whole bike. with fucking turkey brake levers, stem shifters, 27 x 1 1/4 wheels, all the good stuff. good thing they have learned something from portland CL - overprice bikes to hell and back)

it's true. you can crash steel and repair it. aluminum = ride it till it's broke because you're shit out of luck to straighten it or replace a tube.

yeah, that's evan. he's a good guy and a mechanic, i guess he's over track bikes now that he built himself a sweet little custom frame at UBI. he actually had a pretty sweet idea in what to build for himself... it's like a geared track bike with steep angle, tight clearances and very tight wheelbase, and then downtube style shifters on the toptube (not quite stem shifters). even got them neuvex lugs, really nice shit.

Hmm sorry bout that, I thought it was spelled Neuvex because I've always heard it in verbal discussion but never seen it in print. Newvex is what he's got.

Bschultz, Newvex is a style of lugs that Richard Sachs puts out, it's a modern version of Nervex (since Nervex hasn't existed for years). http://www.richardsachs.com/rsachstoys.html
