So during this summer I go up to Scappoose with my Uncle, get some money working. So I have this bookmark folder of stuff I want to buy and I was thinking of buying a top tube pad. I thought of it because sometimes I hit my knee into the TT. So, talk me into buying one, or talk me out. Thanks guys.
don't do it, waste of money and you'll look foolish.
just watch your knees, they should go up and down not side to side
get some nice socks
if they hit now it will be worse with a pad.spread em!

ewwwww. Haha alright I figure I won't get it, and then get more parts.

dude he's thirteen shhhhhh
I'm not the best person to talk to about TT pads because i am similarly conflicted. because I am a skeptic and hate to spend money if there is ever a reason not to buy something I absolutely won't. so, from a skeptic's point of view:
Pro's:
+no more paint chips from hasty lockups
+you are most definitely steezy
+ you will no longer bust your nuts when mounting your steed (provided that your standover height is a little big, mine always is)
+you can buy a locally made pad
Cons:
-functionality v. fashion? top tubs are mostly the latter
-non-TTP users (plus messenger OG's) will think you suck
-gets dirty easily, bringing your steez factor waaay down ('tis better to have purchased and soiled a top tube pad than to never have clothed your top tube at all?)
those are my thoughts on it anyways. if you don't care about your bike's paint job (and you shouldn't, bikes are meant to be used, not treasured!) then there aren't many convincing arguments in the Pro camp. But it all comes down to personal preference and if you surrender your taste/uniqueness to any one foreign ideal, you are a wayward soul in the vast sea of identity. And you thought this was just gonna be about top tube pads...

really?!
i have one. its really the color of my bike so it doesnt stick out. i got it for free so thats why i rock it.
I initially thought he meant hitting his knees while trackstanding. I used to do that so I rode with a tt pad. Now I don't have one. I ocasionally hit my knees while wobbling at a stoplight. not a big deal. It did protect the paint nicely. Do what you want. Pros and cons either way.
It'll just get stolen anyway. I had one zip tied on both ends and it got stolen. meh.
get those yanco ones with the strap on toop. good invention
i use a pad cause: i like the way they look, your bike doesnt get chipped up (which isnt really a big deal like jackson said, but it is nice not to waste paint if you dont have to), if youre carrying your bike on your shoulder up stairs or something, its nice to have, if you slip off the front of your seat somehow, and land on your tt, you ll still be able to have kids. and everyonce in a while, if im doing zoobomb, or if my legs are just tired, i like to brace my legs against the frame when im doing skids. its probably not good fixed gear form, but at least it slows you down.
thats my 2 cents on it.
you could also get those knee saver pedal spacers, they give you a wider "Q factor".
I use one because my paint is stripped and if I ride without it, my pants make a terrible sound rubbing against the tt. If I cared about cool my pants would be tighter.
I just put some bar tape around where the bars would hit the TT, alas no chips, no dents.
as for bar pads, as a old BMXer i'll have to say no thanks to that and sparkly streamers from my handle bar ends....
I really like my tube pad because I am short and the TT is always up in my grill. I also like it because of scratches from locks, poles, etc. My bike is new though, and once it is a little more beat up I wont care about the scratches anymore.
Your just prolonging the inevitable.
I actually put my bike in a rock tumbler when I got it. No sense keeping it looking new.
Like stone washed jeans...nice.
Speaking of tubes. I'm thinking about starting a drug cartel and using bike messengers as mules to cross the border seems like something we could possibly try. Think about how much white gold we could smuggle if we acted as if we were part of a race in between California and Mexico.
or what about coke in aerospoke/hed 3s? thats alot of coke.
I think those wheels might be worth more ounce for ounce with coke.
i dont know. maybe. or you could make fake discs and run coke in those, oh the possibilities
in the eighties hayward police uncovered a coke smuggling scheme in which guys in mexico would press the cocaine into 12" tall superman statuettes, paint 'em all legit looking and ship 'em here. Some how a few got diverted and ended up at KB toys. End of genius smuggling operation.
Also theres that van made completely from weed in that cheech n chong movie. We could press the disc outta weed ala natural carbon fiber and press the frame from coke, and the rest from high grade afghani heroin and then race.
and fill the tubes with nitrous oxide.
where to put the angel dust?, it just aint a party without pcp!
SO yeah, I'm w/ Phomma. I'm kinda torn between whether to get a TT pad or not. I wasn't planning on buying one, I was just hoping to find one, make one, or maybe find one cheap at goodwill or something. I think I would like it for T.Stands at lights and I also shoulder my bike. It would be nice there. There's nothing like cross practice on an average commute home. On those days, I crawl all the way up Tabor, run up some random steps, mount & dismount a few times and then bomb down the south side trails.
