ok so iv been posting around random threads about our event but im making this one specifically for it so that its a little more concrete. i just posted all of this on bike forums but ill post it here
so we mapped out everything exactly whats going to happen. basically heres how it goes.
5:00 meet under the hawthorne bridge on the east waterfront.
5:30ish ride up belmonte to mount tabor
6:00 best trick competition at the basketball courts at the top by the ampitheater
6:30... or whenever best trick finishes were gonna do the ghettodrome at the very top
whenever thats done there is a circle platform with grass around it by the ghetto drome that were doing footdown on (sooo perfect)
at the very end we may or may not do the downhill race if we think its going to be dangerous or not. its a really intense ride to the bottom with ALOT of winds and curves and it might be dark by then. if we dont do the downhill race we are all just going to ride to the bottom with everyone and thats where we are going to give out all the prizes and everything.
events. so basically if you are late still go up to mt. tabor and you will be able to make it to at least a couple because we will be up there for a while. everything looks seriously perfect for every event and we are all really excited about it. if you have any questions please ask. i have a feeling that this event is gonna just get bigger and better every month so come participate.

Fakengers! You give messengers a bad name, and I hope you all get tickets.

    • CommentAuthortom
    • CommentTimeMar 26th 2008

Probably won't get tickets...because fakengers don't frequent the core during the day. They're either sleeping it off in their parent's basement or at work sitting behind a desk. (says the guy at the desk looking over the cubicle wall at brian)

  1.

i'll be there. i know it's just getting started and you guys are figuring things out, so let me suggest that it start a little later than 5 in the future. a lot of people are just getting off of work right then.

    also: fakengers? yawn.

yeah we were thinking of doing it later. we figured that 5 was alright because the actual events dont start until 6 and they will probably go till 8 or 9. but we will probably ask people to give us suggestions on how to make it better at the end. im really hoping it doesnt rain though. and yeah. fakengers? come on. the only thing that remotely connects us and messengers is that fact that we ride bikes.

when you think about it, who else knows what works best for urban everyday riding and doesn't cost a fortune than folks who spend all day on bikes. So bags, clothes, accessories and even bike choice are being modeled after what couriers use. And so that's what the marketed right now. therefore everyone looks like there trying to be a "messenger" when they just want shit that works well.

like for example: spoke cards, we all know they make you go faster and add weight to the rear wheel which helps with wheelies. It has nothing to do with cool factor, it's just practical.

    • CommentTimeMar 27th 2008

i heard spoke cards where for people that actually knew how to race illegally and get away with it..
i also heard that track bikes are the new rollerblades, and thats why all the new high school guys/gals saw it on youtube and are into it.

  2.

yeah, that's a great metaphor you've got going there.

So we talked about it and if it rains out to hard when we all meet up at 5:00 under the hawthorne bridge we are just going to hold the event under there since the ghettodrome and downhill race would be a bit dangerous in the rain anyway. If this is the case then we will add a couple more events to replace those two and it will still be a blast and we will be dry:) So now the worry of rain is not a problem at all so dont be discouraged and not come because of it.

  3.

    Can I watch?
My skidding is doing badly, and my tricks are crap.
(Unless you consider riding while drinking a coke a trick, then i'm rad)

bike racing sounds dangerous we better not make it too risky and have cool events

haha well i guess if everyone wants to bike to tabor for that in the rain we will definitely go i just figured people would want to stay dry. Plus you can go way faster on the downhill race and ghettodrome when the ground isnt soaked and you dont have to worry so much about slipping out as much.

  6.

that's something i started digging about using a brake. since you don't have to skid, your rear wheel stays more stable on slick surfaces. i've slid out less with one, even on snow and ice (i spent most of the last two winters in ohio).

not a brake zealot, most of the time i've been riding fixed has been brakeless.

well not everyone there is going to have a brake and will be skidding at some point. Maybe it's just me but i can picture people going as fast as they can and slipping out around the corners of the ghettodrome since there are no side walls. And the downhill race route we are taking is probably twice as curvy and just as steep as zoobomb.

and to make a side note- we are doing Portland Massacre for all of you guys to have a good time and to get all of the riders in pdx together at least once a month to meet everyone else, make friends, win prizes, and compete. So any suggestions (not criticism) is welcome or if anyone wants to help out with it that would be great.

  7.

oh of course, i was just blurting out the thought that came to my head.

Of all days, of course it starts snowing today. Aaha.
It wont stick, but still funny.

  8.

Still snowing and I'm at like 16th and Hawthorne.

    Mother effers.

  9.

i got soaked on my way into work and it's snowing like crazy up at OHSU

  10.

I'm pretty sure its gonna stick on Tabor.

    bring your sleds!

  11.

snow in portland is awesome. people aren't prepared so life slows down a bit and people just have fun with it. in ohio, it's a fact of life that it will snow a couple of times at least each winter. people get up and go to work, they salt the roads, and it sucks. no one wants to play in it. cars tear up the roads that aren't plowed or only half plowed and it turns into slush and ice that sucks to ride on, people drive as fast and shitty as they normally would, only it's more dangerous for me. and the salt tears up my bike. i took a brand new chain out for one day of work in the snow and it was almost solid rust the next day.

yeah, portland winters rule hard over the midwest. even the snow is okay. as it should be, snow's beautiful. have fun with it. have a rad snowball fight for me...too bad it's still a few more days before i'll be there.

Tabors at what 600ft or so? Hm. I dunno. Downhill race could get very sketchy if it sticks.

Looks like we might end up staying under the hawthorne bridge if it stays rainy and snowy today. But it will still be a lot of fun we have other events planned.

  14.

it's mad sunny now up here...

Alex, I would but… I just got my taxes done and the govt took all my money. =(
Funny though owing a bunch of money just makes me want to drink more… Thankfully there is some free beer at work.

Maybe we should have a quick pit stop half way to Mt Tabor at the Horse Brass for some good beer.

  15.

    Hey,
How tough is the ride up Tabor?

I think I just screwed my rear wheel and will have to ride on my backup, that may or maynot stay in one piece.

^-- Depends on what kind of shape you are in.
Ive ridden it several times, and have never found it too difficult even on a fixed. Then again I did live next to it, so I could train on it frequently to get into shape. But in another thread some people seemed to have troubles.

  16.

I'm less worried about my shape, more about my bike. I think I mentioned before that I'm a heavy guy and I've snapped pedals from the torque just climbing up hills from a dead stop.

If you can snap the pedals off your bike from sheer climbing power then...

... I will loan you my pedal wrench :)

  17.

I guess it doesn't matter, I can always ride with one foot if need be.

Well I'm at SE Burnside and 5th and an hour ago it was hailing.. We'll see how long it holds up.

  19.

Yea, coming from Phoenix the capriciousness of Portland weather has taken some getting used to.

  20.

    about to head down there

carbo loading first so i can crush the competition 8)

  21.

    Hope its fun.
My backup wheel did what I thought and blew a spoke. Maybe you saw me carrying my bike over my shoulder up Hawthorne.

    BARRRACK!!!!!!
