I'm about to drop some knowledge on 24" wheels. And phomma, you should know that everything jonah says is true, and that tricks are just generally harder when your wheel size gets beyond 20" but a lot of people prefer the added stability and control they get from 24" wheels. All that being said, watch this guy handle his MTBMX better than most pro BMX riders. smoothest rider I've seen in any medium (as if they are all comparable)

Just about any shop should have the die to cut more threads on your steerer. I know Bike Gallery has the equipment, but the labor will be more. It's still cheaper than buying the die yourself, though. You'll probably have to cut the steerer down unless your threadset has a huge stack height. So, take that into consideration for your labor.

If you have an old cassette around, rob a spacer from it or use a 4mm spacer. Put that behind the 7spd cassette and lock the cassette into place with a 9/10spd lockring. Just be careful that your derailer is properly adjusted, because it would be messy to get the chain trapped in between the spokes and the cassette.

K_phomma:

I've been thinking. I want to get a bmx bike but I'm leaning towards a mountain bike. Watched a video and BAM! Guy using like a hardtail downhill or dirt jump frame like if it were a 26" bmx bike. Good idea y/n. Who wants to help? I mean, fuck, bmx tricks and hitting the single track.

I went to the Grotto Monday. There were kids there on 20" and 26", and either would clear gaps just as smooth. No matter what you choose, fit is key. The trend w/BMX is low wide bars and a long frame, which is more of a style thing. A shorter rider should have a shorter frame and narrower bars, and a taller rider should have a long frame and a higher handlebar height (by using a toploader stem). I have a Hoffman, the top tube is 20", and like an ass I shortened the steerer tube when I slammed the stem down (no spacers), so now my only option is a toploader stem. At 5'9" I really should have a 21" frame too. My back is not hacking the low bars and the short frame makes the bike feel cramped. Just for fun I measured my BMX and compared it to my fixed/free MTB and the TT to seat is 1" shorter, as is the handlebar height. So obviously you can get a 20" to "fit" except of course the seat will be down by your knees.

I've thought about a 26" DJ bike, but it's a little cost prohibitive. The obvious benefit would be the ease of riding place to place, which sucks on a BMX, because you won't be sitting down. To have a seat post long enough, the seat would be too high for jumping/tricks (and horribly out of style). I was also considering like an SE Racing O.M. Flyer but the angles are 71 ht / 73 st and I was hoping for something a bit more BMX-y. The Fireman's Texas Cruiser has the opposite problem, long top tube and a slack seat angle, so I think it would be too long. How much top tube length matter when the seat is between your knee anyways? The thing with the DJ bikes is that I don't know that I need front suspension, I still have never owned a bike with it. There are some rad 24's out there, like the new Sunday, and I think S&M still makes one, but for some reason I've never liked 24s, even thought they ride well, and would probably be perfect for my middle aged back issues, compared to a 20" BMX.

sounds like the spindle is just too short. never used the RD's and i don't know its taper but usually mismatching jis and iso will only cause like a millimeter or two of difference one way or another.

edit: i guess that could cause them to bottom out if the spindle is the length where the cranks sit RIGHT next to the bottom bracket

That is the most likely possibility... however as a mechanic i have seen this happen with improperly toed front derailleurs and with bent derailleur cages. I assume it's the front since you said chainrings and not cassette.

I dont think anybody is saying huf doesnt make good work but you cant say any bike without a 200 dollar hand made stem is a wal mart bike from taiwan. spending that much on a stem does seem excessive. does it really perform better than a thompson or other nice stem thats less than half the price? or perform ENOUGH better to warrant spending that much money? I dont know, maybe, Ive never used one.

I don't think performance is the issue.. The appeal is that it's handmade, locally, and made custom to your specifications. You can't get that from thomson.. you can only get a custom stem from a custom builder and they're going to charge you for it because they have to hand cut everything to your specifications. IT takes a lot of time and effort, hence the price..

Besides, when youre spending 1800+ on a custom frame, may as well go the extra mile and get a matching stem.

But yeah, I love me some Huf but I wont be buying a handmade stem anytime soon.
