So I know a lot of people recommend the Kilo TT as a starter track bike. Does that recommendation still hold up if the main use of the bike is going to be track racing? What's a common entry-level bike you see at Alpenrose?

  1.

the GT track with the "triple triangle" frame is pretty common, in fact i think thats what they rent.

I'd think a kilo tt properly kitted would be right at home.

of course several guys chose the velo over golf or harleys as their hobby (which i think a good thing) and of course have the requisite olympic quality carbon fiber bat-man bike. look frames with weird headseat/fork/barstem/frame combos

that LEADER frame is pretty track/cheap

but yeah that mercier would be fine for entry level track right out of the box

The Mercier comes in some weird sizings... 53 and 57 and I usually ride a 55...

Is there anything you would need to do to the stock bike to get it ready for racing?

not really, unless you wanted to change the gearing (comes 48x16 i think), it's got drops and a lockring

Pista with a new saddle. It's got the quintessential track geometry.

Leader is good in that it's overly stiff and cheap. I wouldn't want to ride it much outside the track.

Yeah Id pay more for the pista or leader over the kilo for track specific. But this isnt founded on anything other than the kilo is dirt cheap and Id only own one to beat it up on the streets. I know cheap means diff things to diff people, and compared to some track bike a bare knuckle would be pretty great.

Maybe go up and talk to some people at the track too. On a day thats not specifically practice or racing you could probably take the San Jose around the velodrome. Or go up on a Wed after work next month and rent a track bike before you throw money at a bike.

Im in a place where the Sputnik held up times around, but it was fun enough that I was like 'hm, I wonder how much itd cost to make a badass track bike… No no. I have to wait'. Im thinking what I may do for the summer is make a track specific wheel set and see if someone will let me store them up there.

  3.

the leader's(the 720tr) geometry is really not "track" they (leader) call it their "messenger" frame the 735TT has a more aggressive geo that the 720.

notably the seat tube angle is leaning too far back, true track bikes have more upright seat tubes IIRC.

but as a 720 owner, I like it. The BB is nice and high, and the laid back seattube angle makes it a comfy bike that handles nice n snappy. Very short wheelbase. very short rear stays.

I think a fork with more rake than stock should be considered. The stocker has 37mm rake which gives a lil over lap with my big old feet. I used a fork with 45mm rake and liked it too, but I broke it in a crash. Jeezy sold me a stocker which I've been rocking but I'm looking for something with like 42mm rake...just a little more "trail" would be nice for hands off riding.

The most common entry-level frame at the track is the Fuji Track. The EAI Bareknuckle is probably the second most popular. From what I've heard, the Bareknuckle probably rides the best out of any of the entry-level frames at Alpenrose.

You might call around town and see what the various shops have in stock.

What does the peanut gallery think? I would like some advice on pricing my pending bike sale.

I am considering listing my 2007 Chrome Pista on CL at $650.

    It has the following:
-absolutely like new. not a single scratch, dullness or dirt. low miles.
-a $120 Selle Italia SLK Gel Flow
    -a Winwood/Nashbar carbon fork
-New Stronglight 39T Chainring off my $700 Pulsion cranks (Dura Ace quality or better.)
    -Dura-Ace 14T cog with 10 miles on it. Gear ratio @ 75."
    -Carbon headset spacer.
-Both my Deda steel track drops and Syntace Stratos bullhorns
-Shimano R600 dual-pivot calipers and Cane Creek lever.
    -stock, de-stickered wheels.
-Vittoria Zaffiro 25c brand new tires.
    -pedals not included.

Stock Pista seat instead, minus $50.

  4.

I think thats a great deal, however people are just going to critisize that a pista is selling for more than "new" regardless of the components.
You could put phil woods on a pista, and people would still complain if you tried to sell it at a stock "new" pista value.

At least thats what I've seen happening around.

MIN, I think that actually is a pretty great deal for whoever wants a fixed on CL. Personally I would have priced it a little more since it has the CF fork, it may have not sell as quick though. And not to be a jerk but why mention the CF headset spacer?

You planning on building up a new fixed once you sell that?

Thanks for the feedback, Ben. But don't you know that CF spacers sell bikes? ;) I dunno, I could have just as easily omitted that. I hope it sells soon. I am definitely going to build up another fixed gear. I have ideas on some candidate but it will not be track geometry.

tht dudes dean.....ugh. go to Revolver out on interstate and portland (aka rosa parks) you'll get a WAYYYY better price and not have to deal with Mr. Know-Everything-About-Track-Purist-betterthat thou Bike Central guy.

Regardless that "Mr. Know-Everything-About-Track-Purist-betterthat thou Bike Central guy" has the best selection of track parts in this town. Or you could just talk to the girl that works there, she has been nice and helpful to me.

  7.

yeah, they do have the shit. but that not enough for me to give money to someone I can not stand. dude needs to learn how to treat customers, and until then I'll gladly go elsewhere, relate my experiences to others and ask they do the same.

it is a shame, cuz as you said they got the best shit.bummer

I'm a proponent of buying EVERYTHING from your local Bike shop, however if it's between bike central and the internet, I'm skipping dean, and hoping that the guy owning price point or bike island isn't an asshole.

Does the entry level Fuji Track have a real racing track geometry or is it more targeted at urban riding?

The steel Fuji is road geometry. Pay attention to the chainstay length, that's a good indicator. The ST and HT angle is lax at 73 deg as well.
