If I rode off-road, I could see single (freewheel, ability to coast)...but the feeling of fixed (no coasting, direct link(s) to the rear wheel both "stepping on it" and "steppin' back") I can't do without! There is a learning curve to fixed, and I think a few single speed riders are a bit apprehensive of that...if so, I suggest giving it a try/effort, as it's such a nice feeling! You are the wheel!

I agree. Singlespeed definitely has it's place, though. I've been thinking of building up a pseudo-cyclocross singlespeed rig out of an old road frame I've got around.
i put a freewheel cog on my bike and only used it once. i think i just felt really awkward when i was coasting. and not even like physically awkward it was like seeing your ex girlfriend again awkward where i just felt like i should be fiddling with my hands or zipping my coat.
I totally effed up my back a month ago and couldn't backpedal. I learned really quickly how useful SS can be.
It has its place. It's also nice when climbing while tired or high on angel dust......yea, angel dust....
