I'm going to try and be up at Alpenrose Sunday 3-4pm. till it starts to get dark.
I may have to ride up, but might drive.
Also, I contacted Mike Murray, he runs the track. I asked about track time, and if we want to schedule some time for us, we can.
He just said to let him know. For practice he said bullhorns should be ok.
Like I stated before I work nights and can't go to the clinics they offer, anyone in the same boat as me?
So if you have or haven't been up there before, come on out Sunday.
I'm down. I can't get there on Wednesday nights for the lesson because of school and my bike is a conversion. Would it be ok to ride a conversion on Sunday considering it isn't a real race or sanctioned practice?
I second the "are conversions okay?" question.
I'm guessing they are if they have the right gear. i.e. track front wheel
Oh well...
Did he say brakes were ok as well?
I am down to go....I live in NW and would be willing to ride out if someone else is down.
Conversion's should be ok. One thing is if I (we) schedule a practice it's more or less up to us, who is on the track.
On that same note if we go up there this Sunday and there is alot of track bike's out, it might be more of a majority rule.
One of the other Alpenrose posts, states that even geared bikes are allowed at times.
Still if you havn't been up there its cool just to check it out.....
Here is his response to my email:
"You can go to any of the sessions but you need to ride at the direction of the people running the session. Bull horns are generally prohibited from mass start events because it is thought that they are more likely to get hook on something when you are passing. It will probably be OK to use them for a practice session. To set up a special session you just need to schedule it with me. I would need to find someone to check out the bikes if you are going to use rental bikes. If you are not using rental bikes then no staff is needed. If rental bikes are used then there is a $5/bike charge."
Mike Murray
My email:
My name is Mike, would like to check out the velodrome, but I work nights, Mon thru Friday. So going to the clinc is out for me.
So my main question is on Saturday or Sunday's can I run my bike(after scheduled practice), its a fixed gear with choped bars(Bull horns)
Would I need to get off the track if someone else was on? I do have drops I could put on, but I dont like them.
Also how would I go about setting up a one time group practice on a Saturday or Sunday.
I ride with a group of fixed gear riders, just checking out the possibilties of doing a weekend clinic.
I just think there might be other guys like me that work nights that might want to check out track racing.
Thanks for any information.
if you have QR's the cheap and easy way to get track legal is the QR lock kits. It uses a long allen bolt and two dome shaped nuts, one has flats for a 14mm wrench.
They are track legal, and as an added bonus yer wheel is harder to gank.
brakes?
just take 'em off.
Yea I totally forgot about those.
Don't they have it with a "special" allen wrench too that makes it super hard to gank.
torx? i dunno, plus i don't have a torx on my mini tool
Nah, they give you the wrench in keychain format. it's their own deal.
I'll be there. I'm gonna be at the track from, well, right now (10am on sat) till dusk, and same with sunday.
I'll be the dude with the fancy carbon ride

yea i work nights and fucken weekends too so it suck idont have anytime to hit the drome for a couple weeks, its super nice a lil steep but its good ive never rifen the aplenrose drome though... you might want to use drop bars though, if you really dont want to you should at least birng them with you so you can change out you bullhorn. They make a big diffrence on the track!
Yea I'm bringing them(Drops), and also going to take off my brake.
Hey THORN4LIFE, are you a regular racer? Or just getting into it.
I've been up there twice, never rode. So yea, total track NOVICE.
dean is making me go out there sunday also, hopefully. I should be out there around 10ish also.
Jennx:dean is making me go out there sunday also, hopefully. I should be out there around 10ish also.
He's straight up forcing you to go?
Haha, Dean...
pretty much, couldn't go today cause my mom came into town, but yah he was finishing building my bike thursday, and asked if I had bike shorts, which i don't and he was ike you're going to need them for the track and what not and other things, but yah dean.......
haha. oh well that works.
Hey is there a group riding together or anything?
Id rather not drive up to go biking, especially since its not a serious race goin on. A little last minute of me to ask this. But worth a shot.
Its about 1:10 now, ill leave here in about 20-30 min be downtown around 2. Leave there shortly after that. Probably take Barbur South, then figure it out from there.
how far? from downtown?
Its 7 miles from downtown.
And I just google mapped it and found that going downtown makes me go way north then back south. Im actually nearly parallel with it here on SE Woodstock. So maybe I will just ride over the sellwood bridge instead.
grimm I just used the www.byCycle.org map and I think the best way is to take the Max to beaverton transit center and the take the side streets along side beaverton hillsdale highway. I'm in the process of waking my GF and trying to rally out there. see you there.
BHH is actually pretty legit to ride on from my experence both geared and fixed. Its just the climb up to the drome that sucks.
Huss: I'm a normal guy out there (names Kevin). Wont actually be at the track for the ride as I got worked this morning.
It was nice to meet you grimm!
I was out there with my borther, about 3:00 till 4:30 or so
I was was pretty much blown away by it all. Was that you grimm on the black bike?
And I think I saw min? Sorry I wasnt more social. Wife and kids in the stands, and like I said pretty blown away by it all.
I could only sprint up to about 29....couldn't get the spedo over 30. Those straight's arn't to long till the next corner.
Did you make it out whitefolks?
Which one were you? I was there for only a little bit because I did an interval climb workout yesterday and was wrecked.
It was a little stetchy on my street gearing of 65". I usually push 85" on the track.

Huss, yeah that was me on the black Jamis.
And it was nice to finally meet you in person MIN.
Chaz showed me around for a few laps then I just rode around a for awhile for fun until everyone started packing up and it felt like it might rain. Everyone was very nice, though im kind of anti-social type and dont talk a lot I appreciate the lack of egos and good spirit out there. I still had to ride home, so I made sure not to kill myself on the track. And I did my good karma deed and pulled over and lended some roadie my co2 canister to fill his tire on the way home. It was a good day out, glad I came and met everyone. Ill be back out there on sunny Sundays and at the Wed track dev classes when they get started.
hey, man, i was the ONLY chick out there, on the binachi that looks like a toy. Nice to meet you and I hope to see you out there this season! Oh and I should always have room in my car for people if you ever need a ride back into town. Don't hesitate to ask :)
On another note....where are all the fucking girls?! Come on! April 26th is a women's track clinic...among other things...so be there!
I was gonna go then had family shit to deal with. hopefully next week. weather and work permitting.
Hey min & grimm, I had the green pista riding with my brother. He had a green Gitane conversion.
Yea the regulars were nice, gave us a few tips. Then we just rode. Its pretty intense, but fun as hell.
Next time I will have drops on, get me down a little lower. Yea I can be a little anti-social, but I dont mean to be.
Now I know some face's, hope to see ya out there again sometime. Hey playground_terror, have you done any races, or just getting into it?

Hi I thought I recognized the bike from this site. I will say hi next time.
Jenn - awesome well weather permitting if you're able to go holla if you need a ride out. And seriously, you need to help me get Mr. Schulz out there soon yea?
huss - i did a hand full of races a couple years ago. But i'm still definitely a beginner, i'm hoping there will be enough beginner women out there so I don't have to race with the men...and in that case I will probably wuss out and not race. I also really wanna do some alley cats, but im terrified and intimidated...so we'll see how that goes...
we got held up with last minute family emergency, but will def come out there next weekend.
playground terror, my GF will be there, she's really getting into this and wants to do the womens track development class.
Plus, don't be afraid,or intimidated, it's no boy only kinda thing, we like it when girls ride it makes us feel less like bike nerds.

I can always show up, to make you feel better. I would place last, easy.
I can see how you need to pace urself, while on the track. Its all about pacing and being able to sprint out of those corners.
My legs feel it today. They probably talk alot about that at the clinics. I've been thinking about rollers for some time now. This for sure is a reason to get some. Need to maintain a 20+mph pace and beable to sprint to 30 or whatever, then back to pace....repeat this for a bit and you will feel it. I might have to take a wednesday off sometime soon and hit that clinic.
It's just so flat you just want to go faster....than usual
So, it sounds like this is happening again on next sunday? I would like to meet all of you and am def willing to ride out there if anyone else is down to ride in a group.
^-- Weather pending of course. At this point its not looking extremely hopefully.

I'm completely down, the only thing is I have work at 3. so if I can make it out there early enough to get a good run in then yah for sure, what time are you usually out there? I really don't have a way out there, so that would be amazing. what part of town are you in?!?

Well open training doesn't start until 2:30 on Sundays, which wouldn't really leave any time for you to ride and get back to be to work at 3 unfortunately. Do you always work at 3 on Sundays? I have a feeling its going to rain anyway this weekend, so we might not be able to go out either way...but if you can shift your schedule around for the following sundays that would be great.
Oh and I live in NE just a few blocks N of Lloyd Center.
ok yah i guess cause I'll be out there with a shop they wanted me out there at 10 but hmmm we'll figure something out. i might be quitting work anyway! yippie.
im up near tabor, like 67th and burnside.
For those of you who ride at Alpenrose on clinchers, what type of tire do you prefer?
I rode it for the first time on some beat up Rubinos, they held fine.
If I end up really digging track and being up there a lot more I will put come Open Corsas on probably.
Im interested what actual trackies like for the concrete up there.
If anyone is interested I came across this nice rule book pdf for a velodrome in california. Im sure nearly all the same basic rules apply to Alpenrose. So if youre interested its probably worth looking through.

In honesty, pretty much all clinchers will work. The stronger the beads, the better. If you are busting ass through the turns, a loose bead runs the possibility of rolling off the rim. I've never seen it happen personally, but I know it has. Ideally, you want to run tubulars out there, but I know thats not always an option
sorry I didn't make it out there saturday, death in the family
Sorry to hear that :( We plan on painting on May 10th, and we could always use the help then!
cool, ill be there. thanks
